False No Internet Connectivity Message

Have you made any custom firewall rules?

It would have been ages since I manually ran an Insight Scan, if at all, and I don't know about the idle time but I don't see anything in History to indicate when it might have run but it spent some time updating when I went to the current state report and I did not get any pop-ups.

What I reported earlier as seeing are not pop-ups as I envisage them but full page displays similar to a 404 but definitely not one of those. They are quite specific that there is no internet connection and my router does not show any sign of the PC trying to access the internet, which makes me think that it is internal to my system. More specifically as mentioned before it rarely occurs if I am the first of the two main users to attempt to get outside but always happens to my wife from her user account. If she waits long enough then she can access the internet ....

Hi,

Just some thoughts, you probably already know most of them if not all,

If you have W7 you know that 5 minutes after you see the desktop screen there are some services with status automatic/delayed start which begin to run. (depending on the number of services enabled or disabled, this activity takes between 1 and 2 minutes).

You can monitor the HDD activity by viewing the LED light.

So practically the system is fully loaded after that time. (5 minutes from desktop screen + 1 or 2 minutes for the Automatic/Delayed start services to load).

If I try, on my computers to access the internet, before that time, which I rarely do, I can access the web but IE is a bit stressed. (takes longer to load).

Maybe it's one of the reasons that sometimes you are having difficulties with the web.

Also, you can open an elevated cmd and type netstat -e and see if you have any or many packet losses or drops.

If the number is excessively high then you should monitor in order to fix it.

Please let me know the results.

Regards,

Concurrent Internet activity is not the problem.  This error happens ALL THE TIME.  Plus I have a sidebar gadget that shows HDD and CPU and Memory usage and the error occurs even when everything is "calm" with little activity.

I'm thinking there is a Registry issue...  Is that a possibility?  Is there a way to totally and completely wipe EVERYTHING out about Norton (even Registry data) and re-install?

Firewall rules are the DEFAULT.  No changes made.

Hi Lenny472,

I feel the following is worth trying and has worked to correct some of the off-the -wall problems encountered by users in the past.  If nothing else it will get you a known clean install of NSS.  I do not include anyinstructions for the rgistry cleaning fro two reasons (1st I have seen it do more harm than good in the past (especially if users do not have experince removing items or know what htey are removing, and there are certain items left in the registry which are re-used by Norton upon reinstallation. Of course cleaning the registry is your call.

Please open Run by pressing windows key + R -> devmgmt.msc -> View Show

Hidden devices -> open Non-Plug and Play Drivers-> Maximize the Screen

If you have Identity Safe data Export it ->

Go to Control panel uninstall NSS ->select the second option to

completely uninstall ->restart -> Run Norton Removal Tool -> Restart ->

Go to the maximized page -> if you find   NAVENG, NAVEX15, Norton Antivirus settings manager, starting from Symantec

Data Store to SymEvent (entries starting with Sym)  ->right click on them

click uninstall -> For the Restart prompts select no -> Goto Program files

if you find Norton Folder delete it -> Go to Run ->type temp ->Delete all

the files in there -> Run -> %temp% ->delete all ->Now Restart the PC -

>Install Norton Security Suite ->Run Live Update until you get no updates found

 message ->restart PC

Let us know how it went for you.

Woo Hoo!   Thanks Yank!  All of that finally worked.  I can now run Norton Insifgt and I can click on a progam in Startup Manager and get the info. on it.  I think the problem is now solved.  I appreciate your assistance.

You are most welcome Lenny472, sometimes you just got to do some extra cleaning up and it is not always necessary to dig into the registry (IMHO).  I am pleased all seems OK for now and certainly hope things stay that way!
