More info: After my last post I received an update for NB&R. I’m now on 2.06.26322 installed on June 24. I then decided to do a little test. I that process I found out that my previous assumption that Diskeeper had been disabled was incorrect. What I did after installing the update for NB&R was to disable Diskeeper for disk C, delete the catalog.dat file (this info I originally got got from Norton assistant in a chat). What happened was File backup started to work but but not all the time. It worked on June 26, 28, 29,July 1,3,5,6,7,8,9,11,16,17,20,21,24,25 and August 2. It failed on the other days. On June 7 I enabled Diskeeper for disk C but excluded directory C:\BONIC which has a lot of traffic if that could be the culprit. During this timeframe the computer has been restarted many times. I can find no relationship between any incidents/events in the computer and a reversal of successful file backup sequence unsuccessful file backup sequence and vice versa.
It seems that my original statement that Diskeeper messes up a file that File Backup uses is not correct. In that statement I was counting on that info coming from Norton staff was correct. At least File Backup can return to normal behavior after a string of unsuccessful File Backups. without a restart or any changes to the computer I’m aware of. So the messing up is probable not done by Diskeeper. I assume he can’t place every file at exactly the same location they were 4 days ago. Assuming the file Catalog.dat is some kind of a database holding info about file locations. I’m assuming a lot here In addition to the file backup I also run a Drive Backup with a recovery point set (incremental) this has never failed. I would like have some explanations why File backup can not work for days and then all af a sudden work without any logical reason. I would rather it worked all the time and if it can’t then what is the reason?
