Firefox 59.0 release overview

Firefox 59.0 release overview   Firefox 59.0 will be offered to the stable channel of the browser on March 13, 2018. It is the second major update after the release of Firefox 57.0 Quantum which introduced major changes across the board. lmacri: If I understood the Mozilla blog Announcing ESR60 with Policy Engine that means that FF ESR v60 users will also be switched to the Quantum engine and their browser will only support add-ons that are built with the WebExtensions API.

I'm also guessing that's also the main reason why support for Firefox ESR on the Win XP SP3 and Vista SP2 platforms will end in June 2018 per the announcement <here>, since this time frame coincides with the upgrade from Firefox ESR v52 to ESR v60.

Okay.  Thanks

Hi bjm_:

Summerheat's speculation in that Wilders thread about Mozilla's Rust programming language is probably a moot point.  When the desktop edition of Firefox is upgraded from FF v59 to FF v60 on 09-May-2018, Firefox ESR v52 users will begin migrating to FF ESR v60 at the same time (see the release schedule <here>).  If I understood the Mozilla blog Announcing ESR60 with Policy Engine that means that FF ESR v60 users will also be switched to the Quantum engine and their browser will only support add-ons that are built with the WebExtensions API.

I'm also guessing that's also the main reason why support for Firefox ESR on the Win XP SP3 and Vista SP2 platforms will end in June 2018 per the announcement <here>, since this timeframe coincides with the upgrade from Firefox ESR v52 to ESR v60.

Hi bjm_:  Thanks for the heads up that v59.0.1 is a security update, since that normally means my Firefox ESR v52 browser needs to be patched as well.

Hi bjm_:

Thanks for the heads up that v59.0.1 is a security update, since that normally means my Firefox ESR v52 browser needs to be patched as well.  I ran a manual update check today (Help | About Firefox | Check for Updates) and was updated from v52.7.0 (rel. 13-Mar-2018) to v52.7.2 (rel. 16-Mar-2018). Looks like I completely missed the intermediate v52.7.1 update (rel. 14-Mar-2018) to patch a bug in the search feature for FF ESR.

should we update? I'm not sure some of my extension can keep up with Firefox updating, it may no longer support.
