Firefox - can't remove Norton components

I'm running NIS 2009 on XP Pro, SP3 at work.  I use Firefox 3.0 with the NoScript add-on for most of my browsing.  In an ideal world I would disable "Browser Protection" completely, but certain websites necessary for my job only load properly on Internet Explorer, and we all know what a jolly secure browser IE is.

On Friday, 3/27, I was prompted to download an update for NoScript, which I did.  The post-download window informed me that -- WITHOUT my knowledge or consent -- a component called "Norton IPS" was also installed.  I don't need Norton messing with (and slowing down) my Firefox, but the "Uninstall" button is unavailable to me.  Disabling them is futile, as they have a nasty tendency to re-enable themselves, again, without my knowledge or consent.

Please tell me how to REMOVE these nuisances.  Also, please spare me any product-shilling speeches about how an imagined "need" for this "protection." Our very competent IT guy has confirmed my suspicions that the router firewall, Firefox add-ons, and some basic internet savvy are more than adequate protection.  Like I said, the continued need for IE is the only reason I don't disable Browser Protection completely.

And while we're on the subject, would someone be kind enough to explain to me why Norton and Symantec are so happy to insult their users' intelligence and frustrate their attempts to customize programs like NIS 2009?  A series of Yes/No switches -- where choosing No dooms a machine to be good for nothing except prognostications of doom occasionally interrupted by system crashes until Yes is reselected -- does not constitute reasonable or effective user interface.

Thanks in advance for your help, really.  I can't tell you how much I appreciate workarounds for this lousy product.
