Firewall blocking HP printer

I have a MacPro running OS 10.6.8 and Norton Internet Security 2011. I recently connected a HP Designjet 800 printer. Short of it is, works with firewall/internet OFF. But not with it ON. Have gone through the ringer, here is what I found so far. Do I use "assist" and specify local computer for "Allow" connections or just a general "allow"? Do not want to activate unnecessary ports either. Occasionally I get prompts such as: 'usr/ sbin. smbd" asking to "allow".

With Norton Firewall & Internet ON:

In "Network Utility/ Port Scan"

Port Scanning host: 192.168.1.xxx  [ethernet port on computer]: Port Scan has started…
