Firewall preventing internet access! Help!

Hi everyone,

(I apologize in advance if this has been discussed recently, but I'm so frustrated and had to just jump in and ask for help!)

Yesterday evening I renewed my Norton subscription and decided to upgrade to 360, instead of opting for the cheapest package as usual (big mistake, apparently). Everything was installed properly- except- I can ONLY get online if I turn OFF the firewall. If the firewall is turned on, I can't get online at all, and any way I try to, whether it's using the IE shortcut, using the yahoo toolbar or trying one of the links in my Favorites,  I get that aggravating "Internet Explorer cannot open this webpage" message.  The computer also seems much slower than it was before, but right now my biggest concern is fixing that stupid firewall problem.  (My Windows firewall is on right now, so I'm hoping it does it's job while I have 360's turned off!)

So. What can I do to fix this issue? Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated to this computer un-savvy girl!

Hi Kim,

Download and run the fix tool from this Symantec Support Article. Let us know the results.

Hi, Yogesh!

Thank you for your help! When I turned the computer on this morning, I could get online without turning off the firewall. So that's great. But I still have a problem with not being able to see pictures on a few sites~ after the pics load for a minute or 2, they all show up as "pizza boxes" (a red X in a square where the pics should be).  I ran the program you suggested today and got this message:

Symantec Technical Support does not yet know the exact cause of the error message that you received. This can happen because:

  • The problem does not occur very often.
  • Symantec Technical Support has not been able to reproduce the error.
  • The error message is actually caused by a problem on the computer itself, such as damaged system files, a worm, or a Trojan

So I'm not sure what to do at this point, except hope that whatever glitch prevented me from internet access will fix the picture problem?

Hi Kim,

The message from the tool is because the issue got resolved just before you ran it and so it is unable to find any other connectivity issue. Run LiveUpdate from Norton 360 repeatedly until you see the message "No more updates.." and check whether you face the same connectivity problems. Also, when you find pictures are not loading, just disable the firewall or phishing protection and check whether the issue is caused due to these components of Norton 360. Post back the results.
