Firewall rules

When trying to change the firewall rule of a specific program, Norton crashes and even the icon disappears. I wanted to go from ‘auto’ to ‘allow’ but as soon as I click on the arrow, it force closes.

Hi, chrelle1966,

Welcome to our community!

You can add programs from Program Control, under Settings. Norton will then scan the program and identify the firewall rules it requires for smooth access.

Here's a link to a Norton Support file that shows where Program Control fits in to your Smart Firewall settings, which may be of help:

Hi chrelle1966,

Firewalls have come a long way since 2003.  There are two modes available in the Norton Smart Firewall.  The default is Automatic Program Control.  In this mode, whenever a request for network access is made, the firewall verifies that the program making the request is known and trusted and that the traffic is legitimate with no suspicious characteristics.  The firewall can actually query other Norton components for additional information, if necessary.  The firewall will automatically create rules for each program.  It is recommended that most users leave Automatic Program Control enabled - the firewall actually does know more about the program and the traffic than the user will in most cases.

You can go back to the old ways by turning off Automatic Program Control and enabling Advanced Events Monitoring.  This will prompt you to make the decisions.  It is far less convenient and much more prone to unintended consequences such as mistakenly blocking legitimate and necessary connections, or allowing malicious traffic.

Thank you. I finally found program control.

But I still can't find any manual cookie settings.

Ahh; sorry; don't recall you asking anything about cookies. What do you mean by "manual cookie settings"? Do you want it not to delete them unless you do it manually? Or...?

Also...if you are using Firefox, there has been a string of posts recently looking for Norton's cookie settings to change what turned out to be a setting in Firefox's privacy protection.

I want to set up the wall with individual settings regarding cookies, skripts, and so forth, for individual web-sites.

Ahhhh, OK--we generally don't recommend that, for the reasons SendOfJive notes, but you can get there by following the steps he gave. I'll try to post more specific directions to the right screen here in a bit....

These controls are all available in the browser.  You cannot use the firewall for configuring content options for websites - furthermore, using the firewall for restricting website access is messy and can be handled better using other methods.  If you need very granular management of site content, I would suggest using Firefox and adding some extensions, such as NoScript, BetterPrivacy, and others.  To block access to sites completely, use the Hosts file.
