Do you have Norton product installed on both the computers? Do you have a wireless or wired network? Are you behind a router? Both the computers listed in the Network Security Map?
Same version of Norton on both. The XP one does show the vista when you view the workgroup. The Vista one does show the xp when you view the network map. I’m on a wireless network. They can access eachother when I have the Personal Firewall for Norton off. Works ok with just the Windows Firewall on, but prefer to use the Norton one instead. Router is on a whole different pc in another room.
Can you check whether the wireless network is shown under the trusted tab(Open Norton product>Click on NIS tab>Click Settings>Click Norton Internet Security options>On the left pane, click trust control.
I am really sorry if I am repeating something that you have already told. It is just confirm.
Yes…lists the wirless network and states the gateway physical address (which is correct) and SSID and domain (also correct). I would send you a screenshot, but can’t figure out how to insert a jpg image to the message.
That is fine. No need to send a screenshot.
Let's try to create a general rule for the individual computers. You can see Advanced Settings under Personal firewall in the Norton Internet Security options window. Click Advanced Settings>Click Configure under General Rules>Add>Allow>Connections to and from other computers>Only the computers and sites listed below>Add>add the IP address of the computer>OK>All Types of communications>Give a name for the rule>Finish.
Follow the same steps on the other computer and then check for the issue
Looks like that worked!! Thanks.
As an fyi..found this on the Microsoft site as a fix as well:
The issue is caused by Norton and is on the XP machine. See:
This error indicates that you are falling foul of the IRPStackSize bug.
The problem is on the machine you are attempting to connect to, not the
machine where you see the error message. On the computer you are
attempting to connect to (XP), check the event viewer for an event ID 2011.
Usual fix : You need to fix a parameter called IRPStackSize
On the computer you are attempting to connect to, Set the IRPStackSize
back to the default (15 ). Perform the following steps:
1. Start regedit.
2. Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters.
3. Double-click IRPStackSize (or if this registry setting doesn't
exist, create it with type DWORD and ensure the case is correct).
4. Change the base to decimal, set the value to 15, and click OK.
5. Reboot the computer.
Norton AV is usual suspect for breaking it. There's a KB article about
this, too:
Antivirus Software May Cause Event ID 2011 (Q177078)

Glad to hear that the issue is resolved and thank you for providing the information.
quick question though…am I secure now? I’ve granted access to certain IP addresses. Is it possible that if I was to go out and use a WIFI connection somewhere, that someone would have access to my computer? or if there is another pc in the area (I’m in NYC and there are tons of networks that are available) will they be able to access my pc?
You are secure now. No need to worry. You have just added another computer in the network so that you can access it. The other network computers (external) will not be able to access your computer, Norton product will block them.
