Flashing in taskbar randomly as if program opening & closing instantly:

Hello,

For the past week there has been a very odd flashing in the task bar at random. It appears as if a program was opening and closing in a split second so there is a brief flash of a box and then nothing until it does it again.

I have run several virus scans with Norton including one with windows in safe mode and it has only found tracking cookies so I'm at a loss to explain what exactly is going on and I was hoping someone here might have an explanation or know if this is likely to be a virus or not.

Thank you,

Unfortunately as I said it is there for literally a flash of a program box opening for a split second and then gone so there is no way I can screenshot it.

Does the icon looks like: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Windows_Media_Center_logo.png with the down arrow?  If it is it is Windows media Center updating.  If not, I have no idea of the problem you are having.

Try downloading and installing Malwarebytes' AntiMalware (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malwarebytes%27_Anti-Malware) from: http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/

Run an update and run a FULL scan.  Report in the result after the scan.

I haven't been able to see an icon yet.

The only thing I have been able to see is briefly just after windows loaded and the usual programs (norton etc) were opening a box appeared, again for a second and gone, in the taskbar which was just a string of numbers (sorry it was gone to fast to write them down). But then I have no idea if that is related or not.

Hi Leofwine,

Please download the free version of Malwarebytes from this link:

http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/

Install Malwarebytes, launch the program and go to "Update"; click on "Check for Updates" and let it download the definition files. Then go to "Scanner" and have it run a full scan.

When Malwarebytes has finished the scan, it will automatically generate a log in a Notepad file, which will pop up on your screen after the scan. On this window of the Notepad file, please go to "File", then to "Save as"; type in a name, save the file to, for instance, your desktop, then post it over here by using the "Add Attachments" feature underneath the orange "Post" button when you write your next post.

To delete what Malwarebytes has found, click on “Show Results” after scanning has finished. Ensure that the threats picked up by Malwarebytes are marked with a tick, then click on "Remove Selected".

Well thanks for the suggestion, however I did a full scan with malwarebytes and it found absolutely nothing so I’m not sure theres much point in posting the log.

Well having taken a video of my screen waiting for it to happen (not that long a wait since it happens at least once every minute almost and sometimes alot more), I now have a picture of the icon.

First reaction was that its maybe something to do with google, given it is a G, but maybe someone here actually knows for a fact given my searching on google/elsewhere has come up with nothing.

Flashing is just the recording software I used, but this icon that flashes for a split second is always to the right of the last opened program on the task bar.

I'd appreciate any input if someone knows what this actually is and why it is suddenly going beserk (popping up constantly).

Do you have Google Desktop or Google Desktop Search installed?  This looks like the desktop search icon that shows up during the indexing of your system contents changes.
