Hi
Dell Dimension 5150 (almost 5 years old)
Windows XP SP3
Norton 360 Premier v 5.latest
Norton Ghost 15 (had latest updates)
I've been having Blue Screen of Death problems with my PC. Started with CCsvchst.exe application error. After many hard reboots, managed to uninstall Norton 360 and then used Norton Removal Tool - which removed Norton Ghost from my PC.
Anyhow, to make a long story short, I've been getting various different BSOD errors. CHKDSK R has run 3 times, and always comes up "volume clean". But since I'm not computer savvy, don't understand half of what the BSOD messages are telling me, and the computer is old, I'll probably bite the bullet and get a new machine.
Now my question: I have been doing Full Backups Monthly with Incremental Backups Weekly to an external harddrive. Right now I am afraid to plug the external into the computer - I don't want to screw up the external. If I have to go for a new machine it will be a Windows 7 OS. I've looked at some posts and I THINK I should be able to restore DATA, not PROGRAMS, from my external backups...correct? Does DATA include stuff like MP3s, .jpg files, Outlook 2003 emails, Outlook 2003 Calendar, Outlook 2003 Tasks (all current and archived folders), iTunes applications and/or data? I haven't reinstalled Ghost on the XP machine (had a heck of time reinstalling Norton 360 due to BSOD errors). I didn't use the computer too much from the last incremental to when it started with all these errors, so I'm hoping to just try and copy the new data to a USB flash drive and save it that way. So again my question, should I be able to restore from the external harddrive to a new Windows 7 machine (of course I'll install Ghost on the new machine first)?
Thanking you in advance for any help (from my hubby's computer)
