meniniu,

Yes, that's way too long; mine takes just over an hour to scan over 470,000 items.

Can you tell us what version of NIS 2008 you are running?  What service pack on Windows XP?

What do you mean by "It has been locking up"?

Get back to us with some of these details and we'll all try to help.  Some brief system specs about your computer such as processor and memory couldn't hurt.

I would suggest running LiveUpdate in the morning/when you get in from work and then do a Full System Scan; do not open any programs or files; just have the Scan run by itself which means that should be the only prgrams open.

Just some advice: Run LiveUpdate every-few-hours; do Full System Scan at least twice-a-week.

Let me know how this goes.

Try the following steps.

Run LiveUpdate and make sure that all the updated are downloaded and definitions are up to date.

 Open the Norton product.

In the lower left corner of the window, click Options > Norton Internet Security or Norton AntiVirus.

In the left pane, click Manual Scanning.

Uncheck scan within compressed files and scan within active program files.

Click Ok.

Now delete the unwanted files.

Delete temporary files,internet temporary files.

Run the scan.

I would strongly advise you not to do this; you need to Scan within compressed files and Scan Active Programs in case Auto-Protect has missed any.

Make sure all boxes are Checked within the Manual Scanning section.

One of the main reasons for the virus scan to freeze is a corrupt compressed file. When the scan encounters a corrupted compressed file, it may not be able to decompress the file to scan the files. This may cause the scan to halt. To resolve this, you can uncheck the compressed file scanning and check whether the scan proceeds.

Another reason can be corrupt temporary files. So, delete the temporary files also before attempting a scan. These steps are outlined in the Symantec support document:

Norton are not against people doing this since I’ve seen them say that a compressed file would be scanned, if you have autoprotect ON, when you received it and when you tried to open it.
