How do I stop Norton VPN from asking for full disk access every time I reboot my MacBook
It is a VPN and has no legitimate reason to have full disk access
It refuses to start without it.
Working around it is time consuming
Hello @Eugene_McCabe
Repeated Norton Full Disk Access prompt appears when you open Norton on macOS 13 or later here

Caveat: I’m not Mac
I do not want to (and never will) give it full disk access. How do I stop it trying?

Hello @Eugene_McCabe
AI Overview
On a Mac, Full Disk Access is a privacy setting that grants an application access to all user folders and other sensitive data. Norton VPN (and other VPN applications) may require this permission to modify system settings, such as firewall rules or DNS settings, which are necessary for properly routing internet traffic through their secure servers.
Full Disk Access Purpose:
macOS’s Full Disk Access is designed to prevent apps from accessing personal data without explicit user consent. It’s a security feature that helps protect users from malicious or intrusive software.
VPNs and System Settings:
VPNs often need to make changes to your device’s network settings to encrypt and route your internet traffic. This might involve modifying firewall rules, changing DNS servers, or other system-level adjustments.
Why Norton VPN Requests it:
Norton VPN, like other VPN applications, needs Full Disk Access to perform these necessary system-level changes.
Security Considerations:
.While granting Full Disk Access to Norton VPN might seem concerning, it’s generally considered safe when used for legitimate purposes. You should trust the VPN application you’re using and verify its security practices.

Thanks for replying, but an AI generated garbage answer is not very helpful and ignores my question. The answer is also technically incorrect,
If you do not know how to stop Norton demanding full disk access please do not waste our time replying
Since, you do not trust Norton → remove Norton &or Contact Norton Support [here] &or [here] for clarification.

AI Overview
VPNs don’t typically require “Full Disk Access” for basic functionality. However, some VPNs or related security software might ask for this permission, especially on macOS, for features like network filtering or advanced security settings. The need for this access varies depending on the specific VPN and its features.
-
Basic VPN Functionality:
A VPN’s core function is to encrypt your internet traffic and mask your IP address. This usually doesn’t require deep access to your entire hard drive. -
Advanced Features:
Some VPNs or security software integrated with VPNs might offer features like device scanning( antivirus or endpoint protection. These features may require broader system access, including Full Disk Access, to scan for threats or monitor network activity. -
Network Filtering:
On macOS, some VPNs use a network filter to block connections and ensure a secure connection. This filter component, according to Apple’s requirements, may need Full Disk Access. -
macOS Security:
macOS has a security feature called Full Disk Access that allows certain applications to access and modify system files. This is designed to protect users from unauthorized access to their data. -
Trust and Security:
When deciding whether to grant Full Disk Access, consider the trustworthiness of the VPN provider and the specific reasons they state for needing the permission. If you’re unsure, you can contact the provider for clarification.
