Full scan shuts down or freezes my computer

I am on Windows Vista running Norton 360 v5.1.0.29  For the last couple of weeks I have been having difficulties with my computer freezing and needing to manually be shutdown and restarted.  Each time, the chkdsk runs on startup.  I have checked for updates from both Windows and Norton.  I have done a registry clean up and checked that my drivers are updated.  I have done a disk cleanup and defragment on my computer.  Still when the idle time full scan begins, my computer freezes or shuts down.  So I have done repeated live updates and reboots.  I have manually tried to do a full scan and twice it has closed Norton and frozen my computer while checking the files.  I am thinking of using the removal tool to get rid of Norton360 and reinstalling it again, do you think that would help or have any other tips?   I'm getting very frustrated with it and have turned the idle scans off for now.  Thanks for any help.

Ditto for me.  My wife has an older (and slower) machine than me with Windows Vista.  Every time a full scan runs, it is impossible for anything else to happen.  Is there a way to shut off the automatic full scan?

Try these steps:

- Restart the computer in Safe Mode.

- Double-click Norton icon in the desktop to start full system scan.

Let us know if it completes without any problem. I would also suggest to try Norton Power Eraser to make sure that the threats are completely removed. Download and run Norton Power Eraser tool :

Go for Rootkit Scan and Restart the computer. Check if it detects any threats and if it does, please provide us the filename and other details. Don't fix any files now, you can fix those after getting confirmation in this thread.

Yogesh,

I was able to have it complete without a problem in safe mode.  Does this mean that I have to have it run in safe mode each time I want to do a full scan?  What about when it wants to do a full scan in idle time?  Should I go ahead and run the power eraser even though it went without a problem?  Thanks for your help.

nyrxman,

If you go into Tasks in the menu bar of Norton360, you can go to scheduling tasks and then scheduling.  You can turn it to weekly, monthly or manual.  Running the full scan in Safe Mode did get it to complete, though I am waiting to find out if I have to always run in safe mode or if I can turn it back to automatic and be okay.

Did not help me at all!  I was able to get through in Safe Mode to do the full scan.  I let my computer go idle and again the idle time full scan started.  It seemed to be fine and I was letting it go to see what happened.  Of course after an hour I came back to check and my screen was blank (I have no screen saver set) and of course the computer froze again.  I had to manually shutdown and reboot and again it went through chkdsk.  I am going to try the power eraser now.

Peanut gallery here

Do you have any of the power saving features enabled? Like shutting down hard drives after 'x' minutes? Or maybe it's just going to sleep/into hibernation.

Just wondering :smileywink:

dickevans,

No, I have turned that off already.  I discovered thating settwhen it was beginning to give me problems a couple of weeks ago.  I have already turned that setting to never.  Thanks though, it was worth a shot.

Please turn off the Idle Time Optimizer from Administrative Settings, and check if the Idle time scan runs again.

I turned off the Idle Time Optimizer and it still froze up on me.  I am running the Power Eraser, but man, I have been doing it for 2 hours and each time the scan ends, it only tells me that it restored my internet connection and not that the scan found or did not find anything.  I click continue and it scans again.  I click exit and it takes me out, not to a screen with findings.  Do I need to keep running it until it finally shows me something?  And I think I'm at the point of just trying a different antivirus software, this is annoying!  I have used Norton for many years, never had so many problems until I switched to Norton360.

I installed Norton 360 v5 about a month ago and have had nothing but problems with it ever since.  I had to un-install and re-install Norton two times because it would not backup my files  no matter what I tried. Finally, when it did back them up it continued backing them up during the next session and instead of writing over old files it continued to write new files and has filled up my redundant storage hard drive.  I should go back to Shadow Protect.

Now, my idle time feature must not be working because Norton 360 goes into one background scan after another and for about a week now the background scan notice in the bottom right corner of my screen has never gone out.  Thanks to this revised version of Norton the computer I first gave my kids 20 years ago worked faster and accomplished more than the monster I bought most recently.

Please give us some informatoin that really works and tell us how to turn off the background scan and to get the backup files to do what they did before you updated this .........program.

Am I reading correctly that both your 360 scans and the Power Eraser scans are failing to complete? May I suggest  that you download the free copy of Malwarebytes utility and run a full scan. The free version is Norton compatible so there shouldn't be any conflict there. The other tool that might come in handy is the free copy of Superantispyware.

My other concern is what Norton product were you using and how did you remove it before you installed 360? If it wasn't removed using the Norton Removal Tool then that might be contributing to your problem as well.

Hope this helps. Please let us know how it works out. And do come back if you need additional assistance.

Welcome

Please tell me what security product was on your computer before you installed 360 and how it was removed. Knowing what your operating system is and that it is current - all patches, service packs and updates installed without error messages or failures will also help.

I'm not going to try and guess at a solution without a bit more information

Thanks

I am still having a hard time with it.  Power Eraser has an error with it that it tells me it will send to Norton.  I can get the Norton360 full scan to run and complete in safe mode, but when I try it normally, I get a blue screen error about half-way through.  Quick scans complete, but I have done them repeatedly to try to get to 0 fixes and can only get to 7 fixes each time.  I have downloaded the removal tool.  I am going to try to remove Norton and reinstall.  See if that helps.  I have had to turn off the idle scans, though I don't know how to do it for more than 24 hours at a time.  If I keep the idle scans off and don't run a complete full scan in Windows Vista I have no problems.  I am just wondering how to get my identity safe information if i reinstall.

I tried to find that Malwarability or whatever it was you had suggested, it asked for my e-mail to send me a download and I never received an e-mail.  I ran the Norton removal tool 4 times.  I also downloaded the Power Eraser again and tried again and again it came up with errors and didn't complete a scan.  I then reinstalled Norton360.  I ran LiveUpdates until I had none left, each with a restart in between.  I did not have to put my product key in again nor did I have to restore my Identity Safe information.  This concerns me a little, shouldn't I have had to do both?  I ran Quick Scans and continued to be stuck at 7 tracking cookies even when I did them repeatedly and didn't use the internet in between scans.  Then I tried to run a full complete scan and it froze my computer again.  I don't think I have been able to fully run a Complete Scan since I upgraded to version 5.  Any chance I can go back to Version 4?

That should get you to the site. If you are getting the rest of your email and don't get the one from them you may need to go to another computer to get the program.

I don't think using the removal tool and the power eraser any more times before something else is tried will accomplish any more than it has in the past.

You can go back but I REALLY hope you don't. The newer version has many improvements and works well once it is installed and running correctly :smileywink:

Depending on what those tracking cookies are they could be harmless. You should recognize the sites they come from.

Hope this helps

So I have gotten the malware.  It's not finding any viruses or malware.  Still crashing when I run a complete scan.  The quick scans and live updates complete without a problem.  So very frustrating.  The only time my computer crashes is when it does a full scan, either on idle time or when I manually ask it to.  I can defrag my computer fine.  Did it yesterday, so it should need to be optimized either.  I think I'll be going to a free software for now, this is ridiculous.  And I'm not paying $100 for you to tell me I don't have a virus and it's something else wrong with my computer.  It ONLY happens when Norton is running.  I can't believe that I'm the only one with these issues.

You are not the only one.  I am running Norton 360 v. 5.1.0.29 with Vista.  My computer will not complete a full scan without freezing, except in safe mode (which is inconvenient to have to use) but has no trouble with live updates or quick scans.  I have no problems with any other function of Norton 360 or with any other program.  The full scan in safe mode did not find viruses, and the Anti-malware did not find problems either.

Any suggestions?

I had this problem with my laptop.  It was overheating.  The full scan uses a lot of resources and the PC was overheating and shutting itself down.  I could tell because the fan would run really loud for a while prior to the laptop shutting off.  I finally took the laptop apart and found the heat sync blocked up with dust and lint, just like a dryer vent.  I cleaned it and the laptop runs fine.  However, I would caution that you need to be fairly mechanical to do this.   Lots of cables and components to disconnect - and then get all put back together.
