Full scan takes too long

My full time scan has been going on for 14 hours and is only about 7% done. It’s been over 2 months since my last full time scan actually completed. It used to take between 8-10 hours. Now it’s on pace for 10 days. Any ideas for speeding it up? Thanks.

Hi Toastedhal,

Welcome to Norton Community Forums!!

Full System scan taking more than 14 hours is an unusual behavior, we are sorry for that. The time taken for the scan depends on the scan profile you have set in Norton, total number of files that Norton needs to scan and it's corresponding size in total. Please let me know the following information so that we can assist you better:

- version of Norton product you use

- your operating system

- total space and used space in your harddisk

- any other security products.

Did you try restarting your computer in Safe Mode and then run a full system scan?

Thanks,

HarryP

HarryP,

Thanks for responding.  My scan times are averaging around 2 full days, if they are able to finish without the computer shutting down.

My version of Norton 360 is 5.2.2.3.  My operating system is Windows XP.  The size of my harddrive is 74.2 GB with 32.9 GB free space.  Other security software on my computer are Prevx, Spybot, and AVG.

Thanks for your help.

Hi toastedhal,

First of all your Norton 360 is outdated - the current version is 6.2.1.5. (see post here: http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-360/Product-Update-Norton-360-v6-2-1-5/td-p/720188 )

Second if you have Tea-Timer enabled in Spybot, it could be causing a conflict with Norton slowing your system down and thirdly AVG and Prevx will cause a conflict with Norton and slow your system down - so the length of time it takes to scan is not surprising.  I would suggest you ensure Tea-timer in Spybot is disabled and that Prevx and AVG are removed. More than one AVG security program running real-time will slow down Norton.

Please let us know if this helps.

That is your problem: four real-time scanners scanning your files, which is a major conflict and a no-no; pick one real-time scanner only.

Additionally, check your Norton's trust level: is it set to scan _every_ file or just ones that aren't whitelisted?
