Hello Chippy & welcome
Did you try a reinstall?
no i didnt try that actually. i’ll do it now and let you know.
ok i've uninstalled it now. but where do i go to download 2008 again?
becasue i first bought 2005 with the disk etc 3 years ago and since then i've renewed online every year.
Install the Trailware Version of N.I.S. from the Online Store and then Activite it with you Product Key.
If Norton Security Product is all you have installed, then I would suggest using the Norton Removal Tool. If you do have other Products installed and you have the C.D./E.D.S., then feel free to use the N.R.T. - but you will have to re-install everything.
ok so why am i downloading the trailware version, this is only for 15 days.
i want to download/install the norton internet security 2008 proper. i have the product key ready and everything, so can't i just type it in somewhere and then download it?

After the fifteen Trail days are up, it will give you the chance to Activite it with you Product Key.
It's safe to download this version. It's the latest. You could opt for the trial first or just put in your own license key.
Could you please let us know after install if this solved it for you?
I've been without norton for a few days (i've reinstalled it properly now) but i still had to use the internet over them few days to check emails etc. anyway, when i successfully reinstalled norton i decided to do a full system scan. at the start of the scan it says "scanning start up files and commonly infected areas" or something like that. so as it was scanning i noticed some of the names of things it was scanning. there was a good few hundred of them. i'll give you some of the names:
trojan.kakkeys.c
backdoor.graybird.G
w32.stration.D@mm
Adware.Fastfind
the list goes on and on, i can't believe how many there is. so how come norton scans right through all of these without picking them up as a threat?
and how do i get rid of them?
and would it be ok if i was to use another virus scanner e.g. Spybot, as well as having norton to see if that can pick them up?
chippy_250,
You are probably just seeing Norton scan through definition files of viruses and malware. If Norton did not bring anything to your attention, you should be okay. Have you noticed any computer performance slow down or issues?
Yes, you can run Spybot - it will not interfere with Norton.
Sometimes I run the Free version of Malwarebytes to double check my system.
but when i typed these into the symantec website they were considered as threats :S
im sure they shouldnt be there, im thinking of downloading spybot now..
Dear all,
I hope this post helps some of the people who get the 3038,107 / 30380107 error. I solved the problem on a PC I was working on.
This PC had been previously infected by all sorts.
I cleared down the infections (having first scanned the HDD in a different PC) and installed NIS 2008 (NIS081550.exe).
The install failed when attempting the initial scan.
I ran the Norton removal tool and tried again.
Again the scan failed as did the install.
I re-ran the installer and this time opted to not to scan.
The install went through. Applied all LiveUpdates and attempted a Full System scan. This is when I started to see the 3038, 107 error.
I ran through all usual troubleshooting steps to no avail.
In the end I contacted Symantec who over the course of 2 hours pretty much repeated everything I'd done except they also tried clearing down the registry keys (which I had decided not to do until I'd given Symantec a chance to have a look).
They couldn't fix it and told me they'd ring back in 24-48 hours after the scheduled auto scan had had a chance to run - even after I pointed out it wasn't scheduled to run in that time.
Anyway, not being one to back down I sat and watched the full scan and it always errored before finishing the initial scan phase. So I disabled the "Scan active programs and start-up files" and ran the scan again and it worked. Having narrowed down where the problem lay I manually scanned the Windows and Program Files directories again watching the scan.
The custom scan took an unusually long time to scan the C:\Windows\fonts folder and files with names like XXX....zip and crack...zip went flying by, but the scan came back clean. Needless to say those files did not appear to be in the fonts folder.
On closer inspection there were 23000+ files (0 & 1k empty *.zip files) in C:\windows\fonts\'\
I manually emptied this folder ("\'\") and then deleted it in Safe Mode.
Since doing so the Full Scan runs with no errors all the way through with both start-up file and compressed file scanning enabled.
