Gaslighting or Scam?

Every time I run Norton Utilities Ultimate I get this message:

Not one of these noted drivers is outdated:

  1. Intel(R) PCIe Controller driver is constantly monitored on my system by Intel Driver & Support Assistant; IT IS NOT OUTDATED OR UNSTABLE.
  2. HL-DT-ST driver is provided by Microsoft; the most current version is dated 01/12/2022; it IS NOT OUTDATED.
  3. ASUS USB-BT500 driver’s most current version is dated 02/25/2022: it IS NOT OUTDATED.
Norton’s solution for updating these so-called “outdated and unstable drivers” is to purchase one more Norton subscription. Why is Norton falsely identifying drivers? Is it a scam to get more sales?

yes there is a bug in the norton utilities ultimate if you got both the driver updater and the norton utilities ultimate install but they fix most of the bug in the 24.4 but there are som of the bugs still there but they is working on fix it in the 24.4 miner i will ask about it in the
chat

That may be true if I had both NU Ultimate AND Norton Driver Updater, but I don’t. I already subscribe to a perfectly good driver updater app and it does an excellent job in identifying outdated drivers. Norton’s driver reviewing function within NU Ultimate is obviously inaccurate. Specifically, as I stated earlier, the driver for the LG DVD drive (HL-DT-ST BD-RE WH14NS40) is a generic driver furnished by Microsoft per LG’s Owner’s Manual “When using Windows XP SP3, Vista and Windows 7, no special device driver is required. Your system, upon Power On and bootup after installing and connecting the new Blu-ray Disc Rewriter will recognize and load native software drivers automatically.” If NU Ultimate believes that this driver is outdated or unstable, then Norton needs to address the issue with Microsoft, instead of trying to get me to purchase one more unneeded app.

The drivers flagged in Norton Utilities Ultimate, NUU, are found from the same scan detections in Norton Driver Updater that are included in the NUU app. It is a cross marketing tool to get users to want the Driver Updater app.

The consensus here has been that the Driver Updater is not ready for prime time.

Thank you, peterweb (any relation to Peter Norton?). Your response is what I suspected. I appreciate your prompt and honest response.

the bug is only happen if you got them on the same pc not if you has them one bye one then the bug is fix on the pc and the driver updater work ok i has no problem whit it i has got it in long time and no problem but that is up to you to decide there are a few thing it is not good at but that is you you has to remember to disable a few thing ore it dont work
but if you do that it work ok norton say so always disable the alternative driver that is the big problem els it work ok

@globus5000 This is NOT a bug. As peterweb posted, its the same program in Norton that is related to marketing. Norton needs to get with the program in that regard, stop scaring customers into purchasing things they don’t need and that do not work as advertised.

Respectfully,
SA

Thank you, SoulAsylum. It appears that Norton(Symantic) has 3 options:

  1. Remove the “Driver Monitor” function from NUU, extend the Beta program for it, and when it really works re-introduce it;
  2. Keep things as they are and hope that more unsuspecting users will bite to pay for one more app; or
  3. Wait 2-3 months, then announce that NUU has been improved and now includes a “Driver Monitor”, and jack up the subscription rate so that everyone can pay for something that doesn’t work.
The question is: will Norton (Symantic) take the high road or the low road(s)?

As a rule of thumb, I recommend reliance on Windows Updates for the OS and some drivers that are already certified for the version of Windows being used. Other hardware also has OEM websites that will offer driver updates and security patches for their hardware as well. Time tested, this has always served me well with my machines.

Back in the day, older versions of Windows didn’t do a great job of keeping itself tidy like the modern versions now do. I did rely of a hand picked set of “tools” to help manage functionality and clutter to gain some performance over time. Those days have been long gone.

Yes, I too rely on MS for the OS updates, and I’ve been very happy with IObit Software’s Driver Booster to regularly monitor all of my systems drivers, and to do so comprehensively and accurately (or at least so far). Have a great day/weekend.

Due to the scammy way its promoted - I wouldn’t trust anything relating to this app. Likewise for anything Norton sell.

There are far better apps out there for updating drivers.

I just updated my Intel UHD Graphics 620 driver using the Intel Driver and Support Assistant latest version dated March 27, 2025. The Norton Driver Updated then sends notice that the driver is outdated and suggests I update it for one that is from 2021! The version is even several versions older. I am deleting the Norton Driver app. Already did not renew it.
