Hi all. Recently I saw an icon in my taskbar notifying me of an upgrade from NIS 2006 to the 2008 version. I went ahead, and was to proceed with the installation. While initilizating the setup, the program couldn't continue due to it asking for another add-on feature to first be uninstalled.

Now, before I launch the program setup, I do have some questions. I  first looked around the support base and didn't quite find the answer I'm looking for.

1.) With upgrading to this new version of 2008, should I first uninstall the 2006 version or will it be overwritten?

This is possible but I always advice a clean install

2.)  Once installing the program, do I have to enter my current activation key that came along with the 2006 version, so my subscription will continue?

It will probably find the key that was saved on your machine

3.) Does the NIS '08 program have a feature, where a password must be entered before modifying settings (similar to NIS '06) ?

 That is possible

4.)  Once I've installed  the program, will the shortcut icon   "Download Norton Internet Security" be removed automatically? I tried launching it, and  I got the message "The target is invalid" so when I tried deleting it, a message says "The file cannot be read from the source or disk".

Yes it will go away automatically

Xandra,

Stu is wise in suggesting a clean install - especially since you had problems. Allow me to expand upon his post.

First, just to protect your computer, I would turn on the Windows Firewall. This will protect your computer for the short amount of time you are unprotected while uninstalling and installing. The Windows firewall should be disabled automatically once NIS 2008 takes over.

Go to Start > Run and type:   %temp%    hit “OK”.  Delete all items in your temporary folder.

By changing to 2008 you will loose whatever anti-spam and parental controls you had. You may have to recreate them or you can try the Norton Migration Tool BEFORE uninstalling 2006.  This tool probably will not work with NIS 2006, but it’s worth a shot.

Download the latest version of NIS 2008 here and save it to your desktop. DO NOT install yet.

BE SURE you have your activation key written down before proceeding further.

Since you had a problem with the initial installation, I would uninstall 2006 by using the “Add or Remove Program” feature in your Windows Control Panel. There may be multiple entries such as NIS 2006 , Live Update, and anything related to “Symantec” ( I’m sorry but I forget how NIS 2006 looked). Then to be sure all remnants have been removed, use the Norton Removal Tool here.

Open and Install the NIS 2008 which you just downloaded to your desktop. It will probably want to update itself which may require one or more restarts.

If your current subscription is valid, you will use the same activation key.

Yes, NIS 2008 has password protection to lock out changes (it is optional to use if you wish).

As Stu mentioned, the shortcut icon is stuck on your desktop due to an incomplete setup. Once NIS 2008 is installed, you should be able to remove it.

Last, but not least, there is a change for the anti-spam and parental controls in NIS 2008. In NIS 2006 they were automatically installed with the program. To add that option to NIS 2008 download the NIS Add-On Pack here. If the Migration tool worked, your old anti-spam definitions should be imported automatically.

Oh, and NIS 2008 does not have a pop-up blocker option - use the one in your browser; if using IE7 it’s located under “Tools”.

You will be surprised at how “light” 2008 is compared to 2006 - much less memory and cpu usage.

Thank you both for the assistance. I followed the thorough set of instructions and the install went smoothly. I do have one more question, how can I setup the program to prompt me in either allowing or denying ActiveX controls? I remember this feature in NIS 2006  that I setup. I already customized it to let me know when programs are connecting to a server, but I can't find an option for the ActiveX controls.

See if This Link helps.

Unfortunately that article doesn’t help. It seems to be in reference to older versions of NIS.
