How big is the data set you are trying to backup? Are you able to free up some of the space on that disk to allow for more space to save the image? Are you able to save the image to another disk with more space? Are you backing up to an external or internal disk? Any additional information you have about this issue is appreciated. Thanks!
I too am having the same problem. I, though, have a 500 gig drive that is only 25% full. In my case, I ahve a dual core processor and the system maxes out at exactly 50% of the cpu being used. It varies from nearly 100% of one processor to a split of 50/50 between the two, but the total stays at 50%. I am currently on vacation and accessing my computer via VPN, so I really don't want to start a job to check which service it is that stays running, but I assuem you know which it would be. The only way to halt the backup is to stop the service from running. As the initial poster stated, you cannot cancel the job any other way.
The problem started a couple of weeks ago. It seems to only occur with incremental backups because I ran full backups (to a different drive) with no problem. When the program hangs, the data sets are there but when you look at the list of jobs it does not show that the backup occured. I currnetly show that the last time the backup was run was 14 days ago even though it ran a couple of days ago. I have stopped the nightly backups from running to prevent system problems.
I have full backups of 2 drives scheduled weekly and incremental backups every other night of the week. The last full backups ran July 6 and since that time, I only had an automatic incremental backup of one drive becasue that backup hung and the second one never ran. I manually ran an inceremental backup of the second drive, but that hung as well.
Which operating system are you using? Any details as to the system setup is appreciated as well. Also, Norton Ghost reports all warnings and errors to the Windows Event log. Could you look at the application event logs and check for any warnings/errors from Ghost, Ghost Service, V2i, Volume Shadow Copy Service, etc? Have you run LiveUpdate in Ghost until there are no more updates?
Running XP Pro. Live update has been run with no more updates. I rechecked this just now and it shows no updates available. Checked event log. Ghost shows update of drive C (the first of the two scheduled incremental updates) completing successfully a little after 1 AM for several times followed by a Service started successfully message at about 3 AM (the time the second scheduled backup should run.) I found several of these pairs of messages.
I am currently on vacation and checking messages and my home computer via VPN sporadically. If you will give me furthersuggetions I will follow up, but it may be a few days before I can get to it.
Could you run process explorer while performing the backup (filter out everything but the Ghost service) and look at the items that you see when you see it stop continuing?
Eric -
I'm breading this into 2 posts because of size limits in htis forum. first post contains DLL list from Process Explorer and second has Handles.
Sorry for the long delay in getting to this. Finally found time to find, download, figure out how to use Process Explorer, and run it while running a backup.
Here is a synopsis of what happened when I ran the backup:
Backup ran. Toward the end, the "Progress & Performance" window showed the following:
Creating Recovery point
Verfying Image Integrity
Validating Image Data
When the progress reached 94%, the list of tasks briefly showed the same 3 lines plus a line beginning "Scanning . . . " I was unable to catch the whole message when it and the two message lines above it disappeared and only the "Creating Recovery point" message remained.
At that point, the CPU usage jumped to 50% (+ or - a fraction) and remained there. The 'cancel' option remained on the Progress & Performance window but did not do anything. I killed the process to end it.
After killing the process, I looked at the Event Log. It showed, "A manual base recovery point of C:\ completed successfully." However, Run or Manage Backups still shows that the backup was last run on 7/6/2008 (34 days ago).
Below are the DLL and Handle listings for VProSvc.exe and the line showing the 50% CPU usage. It appeared that the process was using nearly 100% of one of the cores of a dual core CPU.
I hope the information will help you determine why Ghost suddenly started hanging!

Rick,
Can you try opening the image that was created to see if it's complete? This is very odd.
I opened it and compared it to my C drive. It appears to be complete. Is there anything in particular I should look for?
Let me look into this and get back to you.
Is there a solution to this problem? I am using Norton Save & Restore and have exactly the same issue. I logged the problem with Symantec support center and they advised removing all spyware/malware detection software - adaware, spybot, etc but this did not resolve my issue.
Thanks,
DavidHH
Does your image appear complete as well?
Erik,
I have just run "VerifyRecoveryPoint" and it has returned "Recovery point xxxxxxxxxx is valid"
Thanks,
David
Thanks for clarifying David. We're still investigating this issue.
EUREKA!
I see this thread is has many views which indicates lots of us are having the same probelm. Having never heard back from Symantec with a solution I continued to pick at this. What I discovered is that there was appatently some corruption or out-of-sync condition between the actual backup data sets and the log file that keeps track of the data sets. There were a few incremental backups without the base set and without interim incrementals, backups that had run but were not reported in "Tools - Manage Backup Destinations," and other discrepancies between the actual sets and the ones reported .
THE SOLUTION: I deleted extraneous and not reported backups and did a "Clean Up" under "Manage Backup Destinations" until the actual data and the reported data were in synch. This took several passes and it probably would have been easier to simply delete all the backups and do the Clean Up, but I was experimenting. Apparently the file that stores the backup file list had become corrupt and by clearing past data sets and running Clean Up the corrupt data was removed. Once that was done the freezing problem disapeared.
Hope this helps others,
Rick
Rick,
Thanks for the tip. Will check things out and see how it behaves.
David
