Running Norton Ghost 14.0 I get what I think is exactly the same error. The reported error from the GUI is:
ghost
-Cannot create a virtual volume image of the selected drive.
--Error E0020002: Device \\?\SymantecSnapshot0 cannot be opened.
---Error EBAB03F1: Error performing inpage operation.
and what is happening is that I'm started a Ghost backup of my C: and E: drives to a USB-connected H: drive. It has worked many times in the past... but now... despite many reboots, and me running FixInstall.Bat and me making sure ONLY ONE USB DRIVE is connect.... still... the product works for 2 hours saying 1% done... and then fails with this error.
Am experiencing same problems. Ghost 14 on XP SP3 has worked very well for a number of months but now can not get it to work reliably.
Error message:
Error EC8F17B7: Cannot create recovery points for job: Drive Backup of (C:\).
Error EC8F03EA: Cannot create a virtual volume image of the selected drive.
Error E0020002: Device \\?\SymantecSnapshot0 cannot be opened.
Error EBAB03F1: Error performing inpage operation.
Have also experienced the 5% error reported in others threads. After killing job, and Using Perfect Disk 2008 to "clean" storage area, was able to get one back-up job going but subsequent ones hang up at 5%. Now it just reports above message.
Any ideas?
Herman
I have uncovered and resolved the issue. The issue was that the internal backup drive did not have sufficient space for multiple backup images of my C drive. I mistakenly believed that in the event there was insufficient space the new image copy would overwrite the old image.
If you are experiencing this problem, check your settings to ensure that you are not retaining too many historical image copies and to set Ghost to overwrite existing copies to make room, if necessary.
I have installed Ghost 14.0 and sucessfully made an image of my C drive and of the virtual recovery drive D. I have scheduled subsequent backups but they have failed, giving me Error E0020002: Device \\?\SymantecSnapshot0 cannot be opened and Error EBAB03F1: Error performing inpage operation.
Both drives had been on the same backup job but when that did not work I split them into separate backup jobs, with the same result.
Any suggestions?
Thanks for the quick feedback! Original job allowed for 10 backups but, indeed, I only had space for about 3. Reran with a limit of 3 and it started OK but hung up with the 5% message others have mentioned.
Rebooted and deleted that backup job and created a new one where the settings match my available (contiguous) space and program will delete backups to make room for new ones. Time constraints don't allow a test now but hope to look at results in the morning.

The "out of disk space" solution is definitely NOT the solution to my version of this problem. I had over 150gig free (with 32gig of total data being backed up)
plenty of disk space both on the source and the target drive...
hmmmmm.... still no solution!

Well, things ran just fine last night. Ghost removed one of my backups to stay within the limit of 3 and performed a full backup (64 GB) without a hitch. Previously it had hung up with the 5% completion level.
The space needed by Ghost must be contiguous so just looking at available space reported by Windows Explorer may yield only a partial answer. Even defragmenting a drive using the MS defragmenter will not solve the problem. I finally bought Perfect Disk because it not only defragments but will also move files together. That really helped even though the program is slow as molasses in winter - about 6-8 hours to defrag a 233 GB USB drive.
Will now continue to monitor Ghost to make sure this was not a flash in the pan.

For those still getting errors E0020002 and EBAB03F1, please send me a private message with your email address (put the error values in the subject line). I'll have some instructions of how to collect the information that I need, along with information to were to upload this to. Thanks for your patience.
I continue to have that message. I have run chkdsk /R on all drives under the Ghost recovery mode. I have defraged the receiving drive (a esata attached drive) and ensured there is more than enough space for the backup. I have checked the bad sector option on advanced as well after having it fail with these errors
What OS do you have? How many partitions do you have? Do you have an OEM "recovery" partition? You can go into the Utility folder in \Program Files\Norton Ghost\ and run Partinfo. It will create a text file. Look for errors as there is likely a partition error on the source drive.
I am having the same problem, too. Started after I restored an image to my new disks on a new hard disk controller…
Marshal,
You're situation might be different. What was the old controller and what is the new controller? Did you change from IDE to SATA, SATA to IDE, etc? Did you change controller manufacturers?
Well… Since the issue started after I restored an image… I just restored once more and everything seems fine now…
That's curious. Normally I would say something in the environment was at fault. I would recommend checking/replacing your HDD cables and looking into running diagnostics on your board. Check the CPU, RAM, I/O data on your controllers. You might have something that acts up every so often.
Just cant get this to work... continual failures after trying every idea on this thread... oh well... the answer, my friend, seems to be Acronis. Their product does same thing but better, faster (by a lot) and more reliable.
darn. I like Symantec / Norton / Ghost.... huge fan for long time... ahh well.
Hello:
One more instance with a new twist. I have been using version 12 for over a year and after I upgraded to version 14 I started to get this error. Nothing else changed on my system in terms of hardware and I have plenty of storage space on my NAS unit. I can run the backup job manually but when I let it run during its scheduled time I get the following error:
Notification Type: Error
Priority: High
Description: Error EC8F17B7: Cannot create recovery points for job: Drive Backup of (C:\), DATA (D:\), EXPANSE (E:\). Error EC8F03EA: Cannot create a virtual volume image of the selected drive. Error E0020002: Device \\?\SymantecSnapshot0 cannot be opened. Error EBAB03F1: Error performing inpage operation.Details: 0xE0020002
What kind of scheduling did you set up? Did you set up any triggers or is it set for a specific time of day? Is this XP or Vista and do you have your system set to hibernate or not?
I am using XP Pro, my scheduling is daily incremental at a specific time with monthly full backup. No triggers are set and no hibernation on my PC. The destination is to my NAS unit and naturally I enter my credentials and Ghost accepts them with no errors (unless I mistype my password). I was able to create a brand new scheduled recovery point last night after removing some manual test backups I made after my initial install of Ghost 14. However, when I go to the Manage Backup destination I see the status of my recovery point is "Unavailable".
I also get error message popups saying "one or more recovery points are not available at their locations" and I suspect what is causing my scheduled backups to fail is that since Ghost cant see new full recovery points it is causing the next incremental backup to fail. The last interesting piece to this Ghost issue is if I go to Tasks -> Recover my files, Ghost is able to find the recovery set and actually search for files etc. But then if I go back to the Status window an error message will pop back up saying the "recovery point is not available at their locations" and if I go back to manage backup destination it says again that the status of the recovery point is "Unavailable". This appears to be a major defect in Ghost 14 since I did not have this problem in Ghost 12. I am not able to run my backups as I was able to for the past year.
I hope you can get this out to the dev team and they can reproduce and fix it. Is there anything you can do for me in the meantime, such as send me another key for Ghost 12?
Should I completely uninstall Ghost 14, run a reg cleaner, remove the install folder and try again?
Thanks for the help
I will definitely pass this along. Do you not have your Ghost 12 key anymore? If you still have it, it will still work. Ghost doesn't have a subscription so you can install 14, then 12, then back, etc.
You should only have to use add/remove programs. In the meantime, can you let the backup fail and then run the seast tool as outlined in the following document:
http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20090105115607EN
Then send me a private message and I will give you my email address or a site to upload the file to (please let me know how big the archive that SEAST creates so I know which is the best way to get the file). I'll need this in order to pass all relevant info along to development.
