Hi Johnjen,
Did you use "Disk Copy" or use a Ghost backup to lay the image down on the new drive? Also did you remove the old drive from the system before trying to boot from the new drive?
Best regards,
I used disk copy and I tried it both ways. With the new drive in drive bay #1 (and bay #2 empty) just after copying the files over after a re-boot, AND by swapping the drives in their respective bays, so that the new drive was in bay #1 and the 'old' drive was in bay #2.
As I mentioned the behavior was the same in both cases.
Thanks for your help in this.
JJ
So is there nothing else to add?
I'll try all over again while I'm waiting. Starting with a full format of the new drive.
JJ
After performing a complete re-format and disk copy with all of the safe guards checked the laptop starts up, shows its initial HP setup screen then shows the HP splash screen then shows the windows XP screen with the dark blue bars top and bottom and that as far as it gets.
The drive has quit spinningand even though I'll leave it this way for a while I doubt it will ever get to the user password screen.

Do I understand you to be trying to boot from a "D" drive - you mentioned that it is the second drive in the system
If so have you told the BIOS of this change so that it doesn't "assume" that all of the files it needs to operate are on the default "C" drive?
I'm only guessing here but it sounds like something I'd do :)
**bleep**
guess I'd better quit trying to sign my messages :(

Since these are sata drives the drive that is in bay #1 is the 'C' drive.
AND
As it turns out the 'problem' is that you CAN'T format and partition the drive BEFORE a disk copy function. It can't even be initialized. Once I got passed that snafu the drive was useable as a boot volume.

Don't know if you're still monitoring this thread but I have a question on your "fix".
Do you mean that if you have the drive installed in XP and it is showing as being formatted and "healthy" that a copy or loading of
an image to it will NOT work as a boot dirve?? Are you saying that you just need the drive installed in the system but not
recognized as being there by XP yet?? Just a big unpartitioned space on the drive?? I wasn't aware that Ghost could see it either.
If so, this could be the source of the problem I'm having with my laptop.
thanks,
Harry
Yeah pretty much.
I had initialized and then quick formatted and fully formatted the drive in bay #2 and in both cases the drive when moved to bay #1 wouldn't successfully boot the PC. When I then removed the partition so that the drive wasn't able to be 'seen' by the OS, then the drive copy by Ghost was successful.
