It took me two weeks to solve this so hope this helps someone else out there.
Software: Ghost 14
OS: Win XP SP3
Synopsis: Create Job C:\-->D:\ Job writes files to another drive other than D:\
The issue:
You create a backup job for example: C:\ --> D:\
but the backup files do not write to the D:\ drive it writes the files to another drive. In my case my internal X:\ drive.
The whole time the status job indicator said it was writing to D:\ as instructed in the job.
To try and get the backup job to write to the correct drive I tried all sorts of things for example having it create a new directory to write the files in but still it would create the directory both on the D:\ and X:\ drive but then write the backup files to the X:\.
After several hours online with Symantec support they suggested that it was my systems drivers or hardware. I had my doubts since Ghost 12 and prior wrote correctly to the drives and no other application had an issue writing to the correct drive. I uninstalled Ghost 14, reloaded the latest SATA and IDE drivers and reinstalled Ghost 14 and the exact same issue of writing to the incorrect drive occurred.
Here's where things get interesting.
I have physically replaced or upgraded a few drives overtime. After installing the drives In Disk Management I had assigned the new drive volumes but never deleted the old volumes for the old disks. (I thought some day I might plug the old drive I had taken out in again and since it seemed to have no effect on any other app I just left the volumes listed in Disk Management with their unfound disk status)
The solution:
Caution: deleting volumes could have you reinstalling a whole lot of software. Please be sure the scenario above applies to you.
Go to:
Control Panel>Performance and Maintenance>Computer Management> Disk Management
Selected old disk volumes that are no longer physically installed in the computer and delete the missing volumes.
Reboot the computer and now Ghost 14 writes to the correct drive letter every time.
