I was interested in doing a comparison between Acronis V11 and Ghost 14 so I got the trial version for both. When I installed Acronis, I could see all drives on the Vista PC, but Ghost only showed the second non-system drive as previously described.

I didn't create any backup jobs with the trial Ghost 14 because of this and thought that the functionality may have been restricted in the trial version. I preferred the Ghost interface and have used other Norton products for some time now so I purchased a full retail version of Ghost 14 thinking it would be fully functional, but on install, no C: drive (same as trial).

Following this, was a series of uninstall, reinstall, uninstall and move sata connections, reinstall, uninstall with the Norton Removal Tool (removing all Norton products), reinstall, uninstall with removal tool and remove second drive, but C: drive was never available as a source.

I even removed Ghost from the Vista PC with the removal tool and installed it on another PC running XP (SP3). Ghost works fine on the XP machine. I then tried to used the Ghost agent on the Vista PC from the XP machine, but still no C: drive.

I had intended to have Ghost installed on the Vista PC and then run the agent on a couple of other machines to backup to an Dlink DNS323 or some other Network storage device.

Any thoughts that don't involve ditching Vista for XP?

Thinking of the ways that Norton Ghost MIGHT not see a drive, I know that if you have created a backup job during the configuration wizard with all the defaults, this will exclude this drive from any future jobs. Is there anything unusual about your system? Norton Ghost 14 doesn’t support dual-boot systems, which might be why the drive is not visible. I apologize if I seem like I’m grasping at straws, any additional information on your system setup or the way you setup Norton Ghost 14 Retail is appreciated. Thanks!

I have installed Ghost 14 (plain old retail version) on a PC running Vista Ultimate (32 Bit) SP1.

The PC has a Intel Q6600 CPU, 3 Gb RAM, Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R motherboard and two Seagate 500 Gb Sata II hard drives. The hard drives are each separately formatted as single NTFS partions. No RAID is being used.

After the install, only the non-system drive is visible, ie. drive E: is visible as a source and target for Ghost, but drive C: is not visible as a source disk, so I can't back it up.

I tried the chat support option and after detailed discussion was told that the issue would be researched and  I would get a callback or an email ... nothing after a more than a week. I then tried the phone option and got a much better response form the tech, but after much trial and error, he was also unable to assist.

I have done several combinations of reinstalling Ghost, moving drives to a different Sata port on M/board and finally, at the direction of tech support, disconnected the second drive, removed all Norton products with the Norton Removal Tool and did one last reinstall, but got the same result.

Any thoughts?

During the installation, did you create a backup job for C drive? If so, delete this job and you should be able to create a new one for C:. Please let me know know if you continue to have problems with Norton Ghost. Thanks!
