Thank you!! The value gearaspiwdm is the value that was inserted for the Upperfilter.  Removing that value and/or the Upperfilter solved the problem.

Thanks again.

I have a 32 bit Gateway computer with Vista pre-installed and I just installed Service Pack 1.  I then installed Ghost 14 (purchased at Office Depot) and did the initial backup and set up some automatic backups. After the installation and all the backups completed, I noticed that my cd-rom drive (Drive E in mycase) was not listed anymore.  Checking the device manager showed that that it was not functioning.  Attempting to re-install the driver resulted in a CODE 10 error - driver could not be started.  This was resolved by applying a registry change as indicate in KB310460 which worked for Vista as well.

Last night I ran the Ghost Live Update and down loaded the updated Norton Ghost and went through the installation procedure. After it finished the cd-rom drive was once again missing and required the registry change to restore it.

Why is this happening?

The only system/hardware I have installed is a Simple Tech 500GB USB external hard drive that I just use to do the backups.

Try the following (don't forget to back up the registry of course):

To restore the missing CD or DVD drive

On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Run.

In the Open box, type the following:

regedit

Click OK.

The Registry Editor opens.

Scroll to the top of the left pane and click My Computer to select it.

On the Edit menu, click Find.

In the "Find what" box, type the following:

GearAspiWDM

Click Find Next.

Each time an UpperFilters string is found that contains the "GearAspiWDM" value, right-click the UpperFilters string, and then click Modify. Delete the "GearAspiWDM" value data, leaving any other value data that is contained in the string.

If an UpperFilters string contains no other value than "GearAspiWDM," you can delete the entire string.

Click Find Next, and repeat step 8 until the string is no longer found.

Exit the Registry Editor.

Reboot the computer.

After rebooting the computer, your CD or DVD drive should be visible as normal.
