Try the following:

  1) Copy the quoted text below into Notepad.

  2) Save the file out with the name FixCD.reg

  3) Open a window (or explore) to where the file is saved, double-click on the file to add it to the registry. (You will have to tell Vista that yes, you want to add this to the registry).

  4) Reboot the computer.

What I suspect is that somewhere in all the workings you have had with installing and uninstalling, that the filter drivers for the CD have become hammered - a known issue in Windows that can happen to any package that knows how to talk to CDs/DVDs.  What the regfile does is nuke the registry entries for the filter drivers.  Windows on a reboot will recreate them correctly.

This works in most all cases like what you are describing.

Will this work with XP too?  I am wondering if this is my problem too.  I got the same error message and put in a new disk and I thought it was starting over.

Yes, I’ve also used it on XP to reset the filter drivers.  So, if the filter driver problem is the issue, this should help.

Finally found the time to try this. Did Not Fix the Problem!

Before I ran the reg file you provided I looked in my Windows registry for the keys or entries the reg file was going to delete. They were not there. Yes, I double checked, I was in the correct directory tree in the RegEdit application.

Ran your reg file anyway and rebooted. The keys your reg file was suppose to delete were not added or re-created by Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 upon reboot. The problem still exists.

That means something is messed up more than usual.  The registry file is zapping the same key Microsoft suggests in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929461/en-us and is the most common reason for problems with the CD/ DVD drive.

In taking with our CD expert, he says that sometimes there is other configuration information that can be messed up between all the apps that have filter drivers for the CD/ DVD drive.  He suggests the following:

   1) Uninstall all software that uses the CD.  This includes Ghost, Nero, Roxio, Daemon Tools, etc.  And most especially Daemon Tools, if you have them.

   2) If you are using Daemon Tools, install it first. (They are really good tools, but their filter driver must be installed first since takes everyone else out.)

   3) Install the Gear drivers (which Ghost uses) from http://www.gearsoftware.com/support/drivers.cfm.

   4) Then reinstall the rest of the CD apps.

OK, I want to make sure I understand this correctly Johan.

On my brand new Dell I need to uninstall "Everything" that uses the CD\DVD burner. That would be software apps such as Roxio Creator, Windows Media Player, Windows Media Center, Dell Media Direct, and your Norton Ghost 14 just as the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

Next I install GEAR drivers.

Then I re-install everything I uninstalled, and hopefully I didn't miss something in the list of uninstalls.

So the part I'm not clear on is this. I purchased Norton Ghost 14 for this? Just how much time do you think this endeavor will take and that I have? This sounds more like "Buggy" software to me than anything else.

How do I get a refund?

I can see that I was a bit too general.  I'm sorry about that.  In removing software what is needed is to remove all third party software.  The stuff that comes with Windows does not need to be removed.

As to Ghost being a buggy product, if this was our issue, it would have been fixed long ago.  This is an issue that has been a thorn in the side of all vendors that have software that writes to the CD/ DVD.  Unfortunately, this is whole issue is due to the way Microsoft designed IMAPI.  It is in their court for they are the only one that can fix the root cause of the problem.  I'm not sure that they ever conceived that any user would have more than one third party app on their machines or would want to use tools other than what they provide.  I'm hoping the next version of IMAPI will address the problem.  But only time will tell.

As to returning the product that is something that is your choice.  But to do so would make it so that you can't avail yourself of what I believe to be the best consumer backup product out in the market to day (and yes, I realize that I MAY be just a touch biased).  However, being in development I do not know anything about the process of doing that.  Would you like me to find you a contact?

Shouldn’t this title be (without the quotes)

“Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00”

REGEDIT 4  IS pre WinXP/Win2000?

Greetings and new to the form. I am a veteran Ghost 2001 & 2003 user (NG2003 rocks!).

I just got a new Dell Studio 1735 laptop running Vista Home Premium SP1. I purchased Ghost 14 for this new machine today at Office Depot. Installed and created a image (recovery point) of my entire drive that was saved to a home network share, no problem there.

Problem:

The out of the box SRD does not have the NIC drivers I need so I have been trying (4 hours) to create a custom SRD with both the automatic and manual methods available in Ghost 14. I get the same problem with both. NG14 write all needed files to a temp location, then spits out my NG14 CD with this message:

>>> Error E7D6001B: Could not find writable media in 'E:'. Please insert correct writable media.
Please insert a writable CD/DVD in 'E:' and click 'OK' to start CD/DVD writing. <<<

I have inserted new blank CDR (Maxell) & CDRW (Sony) but NG14 always gives me the same error and spits out the CD. Pre-Formating the CD is no help.

Any Help Out There?!?!

CD\DVD burner is a TSSTcorp DVD+-RW TS-T633A.

Per the Dell website using my service tag ID there are no, zero, updates for this burner.

100% updated NG14 via LiveUpdate after installing it this evening.

Any solutons out there? I am outta ideas.

Thank you.

Guess nobody at Symantec wants to touch this one. Might it be that I know what I’m doing and the Symantec tech can’t give me a weak, standard, “update your drivers” type of answer?
