Unfortunately, you are not able to create an image with the Symantec Recovery Disk with Norton Ghost 14. I apologize for this inconvenience.
Thank you for the quick answer.
I'd just like to further clarify one thing. Does this mean, that there's absolutely no way to make an image of an drive that would not include the software itself (Ghost 14)? As far as I now understand, you can only make an image by installing the software first and this means it's included in the image as well?
Thank you.
Hello there.
Is it really so, that you can't make an drive image using a boot cd in this version of Norton Ghost? Only options I seem to find are for recovering..
It was pretty much my only reason to purchase the software to be able to do such a thing and I know it has been possible in some previous versions. I kinda find it hard to beleave you would leave something that brilliant out of the never versions. Please tell me it ain't so?
Thanks in advance.
It is true that you need to install the software first before you can create any images. However, you can create images of partitions that do not have the product installed. If you install Norton Ghost 14 to your boot partition, then yes, you would not be able to create an image of the boot partition that would not contain Norton Ghost 14.
When was this functionality removed? which version?
I've just purchased V.14 and really wish I had stiumbled upon this thread earlier ... I can't believe that you would've removed this functionality. It's like ... the only reason to buy ghost was to image machines that do not have anything installed on them.
Is there another product from you guys that does this? ie. performa a drive image from a rescue CD or DVD?
Ghost 2003 was the last version that officially supported that functionality. The Enterprise product Ghost Solutions Suite still has that capability though. GSS still has full deployment capabilities. The consumer version of Ghost was never intended as a deployment solution.
Where can I buy the Enterprise version of the software? How much is it? Can I buy it online?
Since when is GHOST a consumer product? ;-) I don't know of a single "consumer" that wanted to use GHOST to image their PC ... it's always been used in corporations to image machines. At least that's where I found out about GHOST and that's where I always used it. ;-)
I don't know the pricing. I would check on the Enterprise forum. http://forums.symantec.com
When I say consumer, I mean that the product version that is sold as a stand alone consumer product. Symantec's consumer product line is sold under the "Norton" brand name. If a company was using the consumer, single license version of Norton Ghost for multiple machines they were technically in violation of the License Agreement. ;)
I was going to make my own thread asking a very similar question so I'll just reply here. I too must require the capability to create a drive image off of a boot CD as the drive I want to backup does not use Windows (but it does use FAT32.) Assuming Ghost 14 can do this (and I sure hope it can) I would also like to know the following:
1) Can I burn the image to a DVD writer using the bootable Ghost software?
2) Can I use the same external DVD drive that I used to boot from to write the image to?
To further clairify #2, I'm asking if I can remove the boot DVD once the program is loaded, throw a blank DVD into the same drive and then burn to that? Or will I require two seperate external DVD drives, one to boot Ghost from and one to burn to?
Thanks.
