Ghost 15 clone deleted my souce winload.exe file

Yesterday, after fustrating (they do not answer direct questions), online “Chat” with person in India, I was told that I could use Ghost 15 to clone to an external USB drive, and, be then able to boot from that cloned drive without doing anything additional.  So, I then ordered and downloaded, and installed the product.  I then proceeded to “Copy my hard drive”, selecting “check source for file system errors”, “check destination for file system errors”, “set drive active for OS booting”, and Copy MBR".  The copy finished successfully and I then shut down for the evening.  I got up this morning and (with the cloned drive unplugged), booted my system as nornal.  I got an error message “windows failed to start”, “the selected  entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt”, “File\windows\system32\winload.exe”.  I put in the install disk and did a repair, and now I am up and running.  What the heck happened here?  I am also having problems with trying to boot from the USB drive (I tried it as an external USB device, and, in an internal removal caddy).  My disktop is Vista Ultimate, AMD three cpu.  Did I select too many options when cloning, miss something…what?  Can you clone to an external USB drive, and them be able to boot from it?
