Ghost 15 mess

BigBlac_F_Drive    it's a symantec image file v2i   double clicking it opens the Symantec Recovery Point browser

That is correct.  Even when I try to browse to the file I can see the folder I put it in, select that folder and then click okay and get an error message about no recover point found.  If I look at the root of the drive the browser does not show that recovery point.  If I look at it in windows it is certainly in both places.

Just to clarify, since I'm in the recovery enviro using the SRD, when I click recover my computer, then "welcome to the recover my computer wizard - an error box pops up that says "Error EOBC0002 Object ~not found.  I click okay   Then the menu box come up where you can select a recovery point   So now it's showing the folders that I chosen earlier, ie K:/ (remember I changed to USB2 ports)   So I browse to one of the three locations I've put the image in - the root of the usb drive, a folder on the usb drive and a folder on the root of my data drive.  I can find the folders, not the file though, and when I select that folder, and click okay, then I get that same error message from above.  It never sees the image file no matter what location I've put it in.  I created the file in Ghost, it gave it whatever extension it uses, but then doesn't see it when trying to recover.

If I change, like suggested, the browsing mode to file name instead of date, it does see the file on my data drive and also on the usb drive.  But if I select it and okay then I get the same error from above.

In Analyze-explore my computer:

I  Local Disk      I WOULD GUESS THIS IS SSD#2 THERE IS NOTHING ON IT

J Ghost SRD BigBlack

K Lacie               USB DRIVE PLUGGED INTO USB2 WITH RECOVERY POINT

Why Ghost SRD is listed 3 times - I have no idea.  There is only one SRD in my D:\   I also have a bluray writer - no discs in it

C: F: G: K: contents are as they should be

When I do disk part in the recovery environment it lists:

0    this is SSD

1    this is SSD#2 we are trying to find but shows invalid instead of online like the others

2    this is the WD 600gb

3    this is the lacie usb

All show online other than our friend disk 1

Discs 1 & 2 have * under Dyn

None have * under GPT

We need more info on the new SSD.

In the Drives field choose Drive 1 (make sure it is the SSD)

What is in the big white "Partitions" rectangular area?

And what is the text just above the top left of the white rectangle?

This morning drive #1 showed up in computer management as a dynamic disc.  I changed it back to a basic disc and now have the drive showing as unallocated space.

At present I am making a backup to a portable drive through a usb2 port through the SRD program.  When it's done, late tonight, I will try to apply that image to the #1 disc (SSD).

If that fails I will make the boot disc with Bootlt and see what it shows.

Thanks for your patience and help, both of you.

Disk 2 is dynamic and if you were able to restore that image onto the new SSD it would end up dynamic too.

As Brian stated, Ghost 15 does not work well with dynamic disks and I see no reason why you would want one.

Open your image of the "program" partition in the Ghost image explorer by double clicking it.  (Image of disk 2 partition 1).

If your able to see the files and browse them, your better off extracting the image then restoring it.

Create a basic partition on the new SSD (basic, not dynamic).

Open the image, highlight the top item by clicking once.  Hold down the shift key while clicking once on the bottom item.

Everything should now be highlighted.  Click restore and browse to the new SSD.

Let everything extract and then change the drive letters, change the old program partition to Z or something and change the new program partition to F.

Dave

Dave - makes sense to me.  I didn't want dynamic disks on anything and I have no idea why the programs/data disc - WD600 - ended up that way.  That would certainly be how the SSD got the dynamic tag though - it happened when I tried copying the programs partition to the new SSD.

I'm trying what you suggested and is progressing. Like I said, I don't want dynamic on anything and if I get this SSd with the programs done correctly I'm going to wipe the  data/programs drive and set it back to basic.

In one of my previous posts I indicated that I double clicked the image and the explorer came up.  My C F & G drives were all populated with the proper files when I explored them, so that should work as long as ghost sees the ssd and it's partition.

You can do all that in windows.  I recall on one post you said you changed the letter for the program partition so after restoring the program files you should be able to change the letters around again.

If your sucessful at that and your sure you got eveyrthing copied onto the new SSD, you will want to do the same for the "Data" partition.  Either image it onto an external or do a straight file copy with explorer because none of those files should be in use.

Then you can delete the dynamic partitions, convert it back to a basic disk, make a partition and copy back the data.

I'm hoping at that point (when you no longer have a dynamic disk) that you will be able to boot the recovery disk without errors.

Dave

I hear you.  I also mentioned that I image every night so my data is always currently imaged.

I had intended to do exactly what you mentioned as I want the whole data/programs drive for data.  I'm very comfortable switching drive letters, etc.

I'll let you know how it goes in a few hours when it's done.  Might be going faster if I had used an image through the USB3 ports, but I'm doing it through the portable drive hooked into USB2.  Looks like it will be more than a few hours though.

So far, so good about 20%..  Only one error - the process said the recycle bin was corrupt and asked if I wanted to empty it.  I did.

Technical question if either of you is watching:

It's about 75-80% done and it's asking me a question:

This folder already contains a folder named   :\System volume information

If the files in the existing folder have the same name as the file being copied they will be replaced.

Copy the folder?

Yes

Yes to all

No

Cancel

I clicked yes to all, an error message came up and quit the operation.  Dang.  Guess I'll wipe the drive and do it again.     If the question comes up again what should I choose.  There shouldn't have already been a folder by that name on there I wouldn't think.

Click No. All partitions have their own System Volume Information folder (hidden).

Even easier, use Robocopy from an Admin command line.

robocopy P:\ Q:\ *.* /e /efsraw /copyall /dcopy:t /r:0 /log:c:\rclog.txt /v /xj /tee

P: is the source partition

Q: is the destination partition

Change P and Q to your drive letters

Dang, I always select the wrong one, lol.   I had restarted applying the image when I aw your message, this time I'm using last night's image through the USB3 port.  No errors on the recycle bin.   About halfway done.  Hopefully the System Vol Info deal is the only question it will ask and complete after that.  I'll let you know if it asks any more questions before I click on anything.

I'm sorry about that.  I forgot about the recycle bin and system volume information.

I should have told you to deselect those, click no to copy both of them.

The advantage of extracting files from an image is that Ghost uses volume shadow copy to make the image so you don't have problems trying to copy a file in use.

Robocopy or explorer should work fine for the data partition though.

Dave

I think this is going to work guys. I was worried that doing this from a dynamic disk image might change the SSD back to dynamic, but it didn't.  I've opened Photoshop, Nero and a few other programs and it seems to be working okay.  That also means that my backup system will work since I applied the image from a usb3 port with my main desktop backup drive.

I will test the drive a lot more before I wipe the WD600gb drive and if I run into any problems I will let you know.  In a few days I will mark the problem as solved if everything works correctly.

THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP!  I owe ya.

One thing you should do when you get a chance is unplug the dynamic drive (raptor?) and boot to the recovery disk again.

You will need to be able to browse to and select image files without any errors.

I'm hoping it was just those partitions causing the problem.

Dave

Thanks Dave, I intend to do that.  Another day or two without any errors then I'm going to wipe the 600gb Raptor, change it to a basic disc, merge the partitions and reapply a data image to it. If I run into any problems with Ghost or the SRD I will have current copies of my data in addition to images.

So far the only blip I've had is that my desktop widgets disappeared and when i right click on the desktop to add them back nothing happens during the right click.  I can live without them until the next time I do a wipe and clean install.  I thought I might be having trouble with MS Office 2007, but Word and Excel went through some type of reinitialization or something and both work fine, along with Photoshop, Corel and my other main programs.
