GHOST 15 - Recover My Computer Wizard does not locate External USB Drive

On a new install of Ghost 15 with three recovery points, I am trying to use the console after reboot with the Custom Recovery Disk. My goal is to recover back to the last recovery point.

On a new PC with Windows 7, I installed Ghost 15. This is the one where I wanted to recover to an earlier backup. I used the Custom Recovery Disk. In the console after reboot with the Custom Recovery Disk, the Recover My Computer Wizard cannot locate the external USB drive to complete the recovery.

I appreciate your assistance in helping me to connect to this last recovery point.

G15ExtUsb,

After seeing the message about not being able to find any recovery points, do you click the drop down arrow and choose View recovery points by Filename. Don't choose Date or System. Then click Browse. Remember, the external HD may have a different drive letter in the Recovery Environment. It may not be F: drive. If you still can't find your external HD you will need to zero the Disk Signature on the external HD.

This was a common problem with Ghost 10 and was related to plugging USB devices into different USB sockets on different occasions. The multiple partition signatures confused Ghost.

I think you can also fix it by deleting the keys in [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices] but I'll have to check that.

Here is the Ghost 10 thread but you don't have to read it.

Brian,

Thank you for your reply.

I tried rebooting with the Custom SRD, and following your instructions. Although it was not necessary, I was able to recover the D:\ drive from the .v2i files and Symantec Recovery Environment file that I had copied on to my C:\ drive earlier from the F:\ external USB drive. I doubt that I could create a recovery drive from my C:\ drive for the C:\ recovery point, because I had created independent recovery points earlier. I assume that the recovery point would need to recovery block for block. And, with my shrinking of the C:\ drive to accommodate a recovery partition from it, that it would not be worth the time when the recovery point tried to recover the missing blocks on the C:\ drive that are now a part of the recovery partition.

How does one zero the Disk Signature on the external hard drive?

You sure get around Brian

G15ExtUsb,

I'm not sure I understand your last post. If you still can't see your external HD from the Recovery Environment I suggest deleting the keys from [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices]. They will be regenerated when you reboot. You might have to change a few drive letters but there is no danger. This is probably a better option than zeroing the Disk Signature but the final result will be the same. A new partition signature for the USB external HD. You won't lose any data but have backups anyway.

Just like the old song.

Brian,

Thanks for the information. I'll try what you suggested, then let you know the results.
