Ghost 2003 error 11086

I have used Ghost for several years, currently I run 2003 from Windows 2000. Primary use is to keep my OS 'clean' — periodicall, I restore an earlier image, immediately do updates, install new software and make config changes to the system partition (all according to a detailed log of changes since the time when the image was created), then clean up temp folders, internet cache, etc, and straightaway make a new image of the partition, to be used in the same way 'next time', maybe several months in the future.

Secondary use is for 'temporary' intermediate images, made immediately prior to installing new software. This for if anything goes wrong with the install, or if it is demo software, or in case I decide not to keep the software - I can immediately roll back to the very recent temporary image without having to do the cumulative updates, config changes, etc, that would be needed if I had to roll back to an older 'main' image.

Many Ghost users will have similar strategies, there is nothing new here, I just mention my usage so you can see I am doing simple stuff and the problem has arisen during what is, for me, a routine and familiar use of the software.

One of these temporary images (made prior to trying out 'AnyDVD' time limited trial software) I just tried to restore but got error 11086, "not enough space on partition" (or something like that). I have seen a few similar posts on this and other forums but all were for Ghost 2003 used on more recent Windows versions like XP, Vista, and 7, and in many cases the respondents have suggested that this might be the cause of the problem. In my case, I am using Ghost on the OS for which it was designed, so that should rule out this source of trouble.

The image was made only a couple of months ago, and for sure I have not resized the partition since. Also, I am fairly experienced with Ghost so I am fairly confident I am selecting the correct partition to restore to (it is labelled 'Windows2000' so there is not much scope for confusion!). I repeated the restore operation and got the same result. The error is generated at the end of the verification stage, before the image starts being written to the partition.

The image was spanned, which I do not normally do, is it possible that a bit of extra space is needed for spanned images? I can't believe that would be the case, though.

I have looked at the image with Ghost Explorer, it is definitely an image of my W2K system partition, and not some (larger) data partition from one of the two disks in this machine.

I can post the Ghost log if that would help, but I first wanted to know if this is a 'known issue', or if there is a well known 'gotcha' that can lead to this situation.

First time I have had problems with Ghost. Normally, it 'just works' and it's very unsettling when it doesn't. It's like your computer world is turned upside down!
