Ghost 8 -> Ghost 15 - NTFS Recovery Issues

I have an individual who's Windows Vista system was backed up with Ghost 8 less than a year ago. His hard drive failed and has been replaced.

I believe the gentleman who created the recovery DVD's did so improperly. The recovery fails when it is looking for a driver on the secondary partition of the hard drive!?  It's a new drive.

The GHS and GHO files on the four DVD's seem to be intact.

I have just ordered Ghost 15 and it will arrive 1-15-2013.

Questions:

Can Ghost 8 successfully backup an NTFS partition?
    I would assume it can if it is doing a block by block copy.
If so, given just the GHS files, can I restore the data with Ghost 15? I can hand jam the partitions if needed.

Unfortunately, Norton Ghost 15 (consumer product) is not compatible with Ghost 8's GHO / GHS files (enterprise product).  You need Symantec Ghost Solution Suite 2.5. It includes Symantec Ghost 11.5 which is compatible with GHO / GHS files.

 

All mentioned products are compatible with NTFS partitions.

 

Ghost 8 my nor be able to restore a Vista partition properly because it will not create a sector aligned partition. In this case you need to create the partitions using a utility that is sector aligned aware. Symantec Ghost 11.5 is.

It sounds like your able to do the recovery or at least start it.

Thanks for the reply. I captured some screen shots of the areas I'm having issues with.

 

It's the last line in the autoexec.bat. This fails since there is no drive d: (new drive)

Since that command failed the following (if it were not commented out) also fails.  That would be the ghost command at the end of load.bat. There is no drive q.

Thanks. I just ordered 2.5..   Amazon is loving me right about now.  :)

I can finally see your image now.

Q is the drive letter that DOS is trying to assign to the CD-Rom drive, it needs a driver so it can access the image on the optical disk.

 

When you boot that system, you see a message that says to use the CTRL+Break buttons to stop the process of deleting the hard drive.

(The break button is the top right button past all the F keys).

 

When you push those keys and end up at a A:> prompt just like in your second screenshot.

Type: ghost.exe

 

Doesn't ghost load up at that point?

Does your mouse work?

I tried running ghost before I started this thread, and it came up. No mouse support. I did navigate with the keyboard but could not point it to the first file as the cdrom driver was not installed.   

 

Since I have 2.5 on the way, I should be able to use it to extract the GHS files, correct?

Yes, GSS 2.5 fully supports .GHO image files made in previous versions of Ghost.

As long as the image file is complete it should have no problems.

We never reccomend using optical media as a primary storage of images because we have seen too many discs go bad after a few years.

But if the disks are complete and in good shape it should work fine.

 

Once you get GSS you will be able to make recovery media based on DOS or WindowsPE with mouse support.

Then you should be able to select the image file and restore it.

GSS 2.5 arrived and I can browse the GHS files with explorer.

I need to make some ISO images. I'm trying to use the boot  wizard. I cannot get it to make a series of ISO files that I can burn on DVDs. It creates one 10G iso.  Surely there's a way to do this.   Any hints?

Have it write the file directly to a DVD, it will automatically split the disks for you.

When it gets to the end of the first one it will prompt you to put in a new one.

 

Second option, open the image file in Ghost explorer.  I think you click File> compile  (I gon't have a .gho file handy to try it).

But there is an option somewhere to split the image into smaller pieces.

Then you would use one of the boot images you created and the set of image disks you just made.
