I'm trying to clone my C: drive onto an external HDD which I would like to be bootable. I cannot seem to succeed.

I'm using Ghost14, running under winXP Pro. I've tried deleting all partitions from the external HDD, and copying the disk, including the MBR. But, the resultant disk does not seem bootable..... (the BIOS recognizes it and is set to boot from it -- just doesn't happen.

Be pleased to hear any suggestions. Thanks!

Is there a specific reason why you want the USB drive bootable?  The clone feature is intended for cloning drives that are internal and not external.  In order for you to boot from the USB drive you would have to disable the internal drive as you could encounter crosslinking problems or various other potential problems.

Keep in mind, that even if your BIOS can be set to boot from a USB device does not allways mean that it will boot of that device.
