I ran copy disk one more time. Even though this is a Dell, which goes by cable sorting as far as Master/Slave, I moved the jumper to Master and placed it on the Master cable position. I didn't install the old drive as a slave. Booted up and got the same error message...Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware config problem. Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path & disk hardware.
I rebooted again from the Ghost recovery CD and ran the Partition checker and it saw the drive and partition and said it was OK. I redid the MSB using the recovery CD but no change.
I rebooted again and went into setup and the PC is not seeing any hard drive.
Dell Dimension 8300.
Frustrated right now and have installed the new drive as a slave to the older one, but this is not what I wanted to accomplish.
Even though you're getting the hardware problem message, are you able to boot into safe mode or does that fail as well? What type of HDD's are these? Are they the same type (i.e. SATA, IDE, etc)? What's the new drive?
When booting, with the new drive installed, I get the error message and can’t get to Win to do a safe boot. The HDs are IDE I’m assuming since they both have the ribbon connectors, 40 pins or whatever it is. The old one is a Maxstor and the new is a Western Digital 80g. Old is 40g.
Disk copy can be a challenge to use, one thing to remember is you never want two or more OS's installed on a computer unless you are using boot manager. If the two drives were visible during boot it is possible that both drives will be accessed during the boot process causing at the very least cross linking of files. When this happens the system may boot, but if anything happens to the secondary drive the system will become unbootable. This is what I call Siamese twin drives, neither one will work without the other.
Worst case scenario is both drives will become corrupted and unusable.
Keep in mind this is not a limitation of Ghost but simply how Microsoft operating systems behave.
It sounds like the disk copy succeeded. The reason why the new drive is not visable in "My computer" is you did not give the drive a letter, a good thing and that is the default selection by Ghost because the drive was made bootable.
At this point you should be able to assign the new drive a letter using the device manager. Once this is done power down the system, disconnect the old drive or remove it (do not boot with both drives connected). Set the jumpers to master on the new drive and power the system up. Windows should assign the new drive as "C" and work correctly.
I recommend when using Disk Copy to first use Ghost to create a backup of the old drive, saving it to a exteranal USB hard drive or other location.
The old drive can be removed and saved as a backup. If you wish to use the old drive it will need to be formated first. I would suggest disconnecting the new drive, connecting the old drive and booting off of your XP OS cd to format the drive. Another option would be to boot from a Windows 98 bootdisk, and use that to format the drive. www.bootdisk.com is a great resource for bootdisk options.
Best regards,
I installed a larger HD as a slave drive and did a copy hard drive function. 4 hours later the copy was finished. I swapped the two drives around and tried to boot the PC. I received the following error message...Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware config problem. Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path & disk hardware.
Using win xp pro.
Should I have given the copy a drive letter when I copied? I selected none. I did copy the MBR and I selected "select drive active for booting". Both HDs are set to cable follow for master slave. All connections ok and PC booted ok when I swapped the drives back again.
Dell Dimension 8300. Any thoughts??
One other thing...when I restored the drives back to original configuration, "My Computer" doesn't show the slave drive, but the copy went ok and was completed.
A couple questions. After you finished the copy and performed the swap, did you reset the pin configuration so the new drive was the only drive set as master? Check the BIOS to see if it sees the new drive properly when you have it as a slave. You might try booting from the Symantec Recovery Disk and running PARTINFO (one of the tools provided) with the new configuration. Check to ensure that you have a good partition on the new drive and that only one is set as active. Since both drives are technically primary partitions you'll have to have only one set as a bootable partition. Let me know if you have any questions/problems.
