Ron,
Which exact build of NGH14 are you running? Can you tell me the specific error(s) you're getting? Did you have NGH12 before? What can you tell me about the drive you're using?
My apologies for not responding quicker.
I attempted to go thru the steps to document them specifically, and my computer crashed in the middle of the note.
See new note for new problem.
Ron
Hi Ron,
When your system comes back up and you're able to try creating a new disk, let us know the answers to Nate's questions. Thanks!
I have experienced the same problem when trying to create a recovery disk with Ghost 14. Details are:
Dell XPS420
Vista SP1
Disk writer is PBDS DVD+-RW -16W1S
Ghost 14 Build 14.0.0.26325, (todays update, after uninstalling and re-installing Ghost)
After the "create recovery disk" task has copied files from symantec disk to cache and added driver information, the Symantec disk is ejected and the following message appears:
"Could not erase media 'E:'. Please insert a writable CD/DVD media. Please insert a writable CD/DVD in 'E:' and click OK to start CD/DVD writing"
I do as instructed, and the same error message appears again, repeatedly with clean CD-R or DVD-R. Impossible to make progress from here. Just have to cancel the job at this stage. On one occasion it got past this stage OK and prepared the image for writing to CD (which took about an hour), and then the computer just locked up and a hard reset was needed.
What next Mr Symantec?
edited a couple of hours later to add this:
Oh, and another problem that I've just discovered. I tried backing up a single folder to a CD. It all seemed to work fine, all the screens indicated it was doing the backup and the Cd was ejected when complete. However, nothing was on the CD! Windows explorer found nothing. Norton Ghost found nothing.
I suspect the CD/DVD drive is not compatible with Ghost and since I've got about 3 working days left to return the Norton product to Amazon under my legal rights, that is what I will do unless a solution is forthcoming very soon.
Dell sell rather a lot of computers, and if the CD writer they install is not compatible with Norton, there is a problem and it should not be the customer's problem.

If you haven’t done it already, I would recommend visiting the Dell Support site and installing all the latest drivers and firmware for this device. A quick search of the Dell model came up with several driver and firmware updates for CD/DVD devices. I apologize if you’ve already done this. What type of media are you using? What is the brand? Have you tried others?
Tony, many thanks for taking this one up. The CD/DVD drive is listed in Device Manager as PBDS DVD+-RW DH-16W1S. The drivers listed are <cdrom.sys> <GEARAspiWDM.sys> and <PxHelp20.sys>. The Dell download list for the XPS420 shows no driver or firmware update for this unit. A Google trawl finds nothing either. The computer now has Vista SP1 installed, no difference.
I tried making the recovery disk on Verbatim and TDK CD-R media and both failed. These media have been OK for writing other data files, on the same CD/DVD writer.
The good news is, that I did a full recovery from a Ghost image of 135 GB that was on external hard drive, running it from the Norton Ghost product CD. I've also copied the Ghost product CD onto another CD using the offending drive and Roxio software, and that copy is OK. However, there is still the bug that Ghost will not write to CD/DVD, but Roxio and Vista will write to it, so there must be a bug in Ghost. I'm less concerned about the bug now that I've achieved recovery using the Ghost CD, and the missing network drivers that would necessitate a custom recovery CD don't seem to be a big issue because I don't back up to a network.

Also attempting to create a custom SRD with Norton Ghost 14 for a Windows XP system. Run through the create custom recovery disk wizard and all goes well until program attempts to write to CD. The “preparing to write to CD” screen stays on for quite sometime and then I get an error message that says, “unable to write ISO image to CD”. Have attempted several times with the same result. I use the CD burner for other burning tasks and it works fine so am positive it is not the burner. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
If you can provide information on the make and model of your CD burner, as well as the brand of disk you are using, that would be helpful. Many times, CD/DVD drives have intermittent problems burning to specific brands of media.
Additionally, it is still possible that your drive does not have all the latest driver and firmware updates. Have you been able to create an ISO with this drive before? Which Operating System are you using? Also, which drivers are being added to the Custom Recovery Disk? Any additional information is appreciated.
As I said on my post, I am using ghost 14 with windows XP with SP2 operating system and all upstaes are current as of last Sunday. I have a Dell DVD burner and I added an Aesus burner for a dual system. Using Memorex CDs and DVDs. Both burners are less than 6 months old. I have not been able to create a custom recovery disk as it will not burn to the CD. Additionally, Ghost will not copy an image to my external drive as it says that the Snap Volume cannot be created on this drive. I have uninstalled Ghost and reinstalled it with the same results. I have updated the drivers on my burners and also have run live update on Ghost with no luck. So far the program will not do anything except start up!! Needless to say, this was a $70 waste of money for this program. I had used Norton 2003 ghost with no problems but with limited USB support I wanted to get out of the DOS environment. Not a good decision so far. So where are we?
1) Program will not burn a custom CD or DVD to burner
2) Cannot backup or copy image to external
3) Tried to copy an image to a different partition and it says it cant do that with Windows running.
Not a happy camper at all.
Could you try with only one of the burners connected? The other thing would be to look in the Windows event logs for Errors and Warnings around the time you experience the problem.
I am also having this identical problem with Ghost 14. Both CD-ROM drives are up to date with latest Dell firmware. The error that occurs is E7D6001B. Using Office Depot and HP CD’s. Have Roxio Easy Media Creator 10 and CDBurner XP.
Could you run Proccess Explorer while attempting to create the custom disk? Filter and only show VProSvc.exe. This should tell us what the product is doing and hopefully why the problem is occuring.
Erik,
Good news! I ran Process Explorer showing VProSvc.exe. (I never could figure out where the "Filter" was so I just suspended all of the other operations.) This time the Custom Recovery Disk completed without any error messages. I have no idea what was different this time! There was a long delay at 96 % ("Preparing to write to the disk") this time where I usually get the error message. I muffed the "Test" disk procedure but the contents appear to be complete and it takes me to Recovery Mode. I wish I knew more about what happened in order to help the other 2 people having difficulty on this string. Thank you for your help!
It sounds like the reason for the initial failures was due to interference of the process. By running process explorer you were putting a load to slow down things which sounds like it led to a successfull result. I'm glad we got this to work for you.
