Hacked

I received an email this morning thanking me for my payment of $488 for my subscription for Geek Squad. When I called a man told me that he could indeed see that I did not order this and that I had been hacked by the dark web. He offered to walk me through how to fix it and how to get a refund. I immediately became suspicious. Has anyone else experienced this?

This is a common scam. You get an email with an invoice or a supposed confirmation of a subscription payment for an outrageous amount of money. They give a phone number for you to call, and if you do, they offer to refund the payment if you give them your payment information. Of course if you do that, they are free to actually put a charge through your account, that may actually clean out your account.

If you ever see one of these and you do not deal with the company, it is easy to recognise and ignore the scam. If you do deal with the company, some are even for Norton, never call any phone number or click any link in the email. Go directly to your Account for that company, or contact their customer support found from their company website. Not from an internet search which will likely not have the Company as the first search results are usually just service companies that offer support for multiple products.
