Hanging shutdown after new NIS 2014 update

Vista Home Basic laptop
NIS 2014 (Version7.xxx I think)

OK yesterday I ran a manual live update. Seems like the update delivered a new version of NIS 2014.
The NIS UI gave me the option to restart now or restart later. I chose restart now. So my machine goes in the process of shutting down like it should.
But I get to the part where the desktop is gone and there is a light blue background on the screen and it says shutting down, with the little spinning circle.
So the circle is spinning and spinning. So I have a history of being impatient. But re=ather than force a shutdown, I just go in the other room to watch TV.
I check back again in 30 mins, same situation spinning circle and screen says shutting down. So I leave and come back again in 45 mins same thing.

So it goes this way about 3 hours and I think something must be stuck. So wife just turns off the power button.
The laptop has not been turned back on yet.I am at work so I cant turn it on.
But I’m wondering if this hanging shutdown and subsequent power turn off would have messed up the installation of the new NIS 2014 version UPDATE?
