My hard drive often runs constantly for several hours at a time, causing everything else to run very slowly. This will start and stop for now apparent reason (was running most of the day today, then just stopped within the last hour)
Looking at Task Manager, the two processes with very high I/O read/write/other counts are:
-ccsvchst.exe (part of Norton I think, with mostly I/O Reads and Other; relatively few I/O Writes)
-lsass.exe (part of Windows? Has a mix of Reads/Writes/Other)
I'm running Norton 360 (v20.4.0.40) on Windows XP, SP3
Any thoughts on why this is happening and how to stop/prevent it?
Can you check in Norton history to see what processes where running at the times the hard disc was spinning and does it show completed, it may be a tune up process.
I see two items in Norton task history possibly near the time this started (most recently at least), both with duration a lot shorter than the hard-drive spinning period:
Norton Community Watch, completed with duration 00:02:18
Backing Up DefaultSet, Failed to complet with duration 00:00:02 (I have it backup to an external hard drive that I only connect when for doing manual backup)
When the hard drive starts spinning again can you close all programmes open the task manager, click the applications tab and check what’s running, click the process tab and then the CPU tab and the memory tab can be clicked to sort from high to low and low to high set one from high to low and then the other to check what applications are running
The trial version you have is probably the pro version as its running when its not open which has real time protection and it is recommended that only one real time security software be running.
Use the process below to remove Malware Bytes. You’ll need to download and save the removal tool from the security software’s main website or use the singularlabs website on the link below and choose from the list.
Uninstall using windows add/remove programme or use revo
Restart the computer.
Run the removal tool.
Restart the computer.
When selecting the type of uninstall there are different options relating to depth of search it can then provide a long list in some cases of check boxes that need careful examination, it shows what boxes you need to check, its doing this to get the user to buy the pro version I think. When software is uninstalled using the windows add/remove programme it can leave some information behind which if there’s enough of it, it can cause the computer problems.
For the free version bottom of the page left hand side button, third button up.
Norton has a tune up process that for some users does not work so if its causing problems one way it may go another way. Norton calls it optimisation, which launches the windows defragmentation process. Can you start the windows defragmenting process when the hard disk is not spinning, it can take a long time to defrag so be on mains power and set the computer power saving options to never turn off.
Can you start the computer in safe mode (see help and support from the start menu)? Disconnect the Internet before booting into safe mode as Norton appears to be disabled in safe mode only allowing a full scan. It would be interesting to find out the out come.
I removed MBAM with its own uninstaller, though this didn't stop the hard drive running.
Then tried starting up in safe mode, which worked, no drive running, but can't do much else.
I ran the defrag in safe mode, and checked the option to run CHKDSK at next startup.
Since then, it's been about a week without the hard drive issue recurring.
I'm kind of curious why the Norton software gets stuck in this, but for now just happy it's working better.
Interestingly, Task Manager shows ccsvchst and lsass processes still racking up big I/O counts, but it's no longer slowing things down as far as I can tell.
