My Norton Internet Security subscription expires day after tomorrow. I just bought Norton360 from Office Depot last week (so I assume that it is the latest version . . . I don't find a version # anywhere).
"Launch Norton Install" (on CD) did nothing . . . repeated several times.
Tried Start.exe (on CD) . . . nothing
From old (installed) Norton Internet Security
"Support"
Norton Autofix
Internet Connectivity - Host file Cleanup . . . Failed.
I'm at a complete loss . . . I don't want to be w/o protection!

The printed instructions in the CD box said to close all open programs . . . does that include Norton Internet Security? I guess, due to paranoia, I was afraid to close NIS. Will the N360 installation also uninstall NIS? Or would I use the Norton Removal Tool for that . . . before installing N360 . . . or after?
I've usually had a long update process after installing any Norton software, but never has the CD failed to work.
Can I copy the downloaded latest N360 to a portable drive for installation on (Vista) my laptop? That should be faster & easier than downloading again. The license is for 3 computers.
I'll download the latest build, but wait for your reply before trying to install.
You need to have some Internet security so either Norton or windows defender and windows firewall and then get up dates and recheck for updates until there are no more updates restarting as requested.
You may have a corrupt disc so there are links below to download either the standard or premier version of Norton 360. your key is only valid for the version you have purchased.
After downloading the above use the process below to remove the Norton product.
To uninstall any security software use the windows add/remove programme first.
Then restart the computer.
Then run the Norton removal tool.
Then restart the computer.
Install Norton, you’ll need to activate it, run live updates as many times as it takes to get, no more live updates, restarting as required.
You might like to backup the personal data and you’ll need to backup or export in both formats your identity safe and any other users identity safe if it is used, before doing the above.
If you have any questions please ask before you start?
Yes it is best to use the Norton Removal Tool when going from one kind of Norton (NIS) to another (N360). You can download it by using this link http://www.symantec.com/nrt/ and following the instructions there.
What Quads is saying about version boils down to this: The disk you just bought is almost certainly what is generally known as the 2013 version but Norton changed the identification system last year dropping the year and bringing all 3 products into line since while NIS in 2012 was V19........ N360 was V6 ! So now with 2013 (which for N360 was released in Spring 2013) all are V20 this year and will be V21 for the next release which is in user beta testing now.
And to make life difficult for us users I don't think they put the year or V number anywhere visible although you can find it once you have it installed by looking at Support / About
So your CD is as Quads said frozen on the first release and there have been a number of improvement and bug fixes since then. You can install from your CD after removing NIS and then do a fairly massive online update but if you would rather download the newer version then intesec has given details in his message.
Just a suggestions - if you can still use your NIS installation, please Export your ID Safe Data (if you use it for log-ins/passwords) prior to doing anything more with your system. Export it to a safe location, as you will wanto to use the Option to toally remove your settings when uninstalling NIS.
Thanks, All. I really appreciate your help. I got N360 installed & registered. My problems, I think, are solved . . . don't know which reply to "accept as solution".
Anyway, here's a summary . . .
Even before most of your replies, I had a brief online Norton chat session. I was able to install using the CD & a long download of updates, but could not activate. "My Account" showed trial version. Next morning I was able to activate OK.
Last night, much to my surprise, I got a follow up phone call from the chat technician, asking about the status & if there was anything else he could do. I had not even tried to install N360on my laptop. I asked if I should uninstall NIS beforehand & he said no. Long story . . . but he took control & successfully installed and activated on the laptop.
Because I have been unable to read the .PDF documentation files from the CD on either my desktop or laptop computers, I would like to download User's Guide & any other documentation. Where do I find that?
In regards to selecting the post that helped the most as the solution - if all else fails - selct your own post that states that Norton Online Chat and the followup did the trick!
