was thinking of getting comcast service. Appearantly the security package they provide is Norton?
So if I take comcast and accept thee security package:
1 I don’t need to purchase Norton 2012 when my current subscription runs out?
2.is the comcast Norton internet security 2012 version?
3. Does it change every year so like when NIS 2013 comes out, does the comcast Norton uninstall itself and installs 2013?
Or is the comcast Norton in essence a different animal than the NIS 2011, 2012, and 2013 in that there is not a yearly version?

Norton Security Suite does not get updated as quickly as N360. They are still on version 5 while N360 is on version 6.

That is correct, if you become a Comcast customer, after your current Norton subscription runs out you can obtain Norton Security Suite (NSS) free of charge. NSS is a clone of Norton 360, with all of the goodies offered in N 360 with the exception of online backup. NSS will backup to an external drive or another internal HD/partition. Comcast does offer another service for online storage. That info can be found here:

Please be aware that you will have to backup (export) your ID Safe data, remove your current Norton Product, run the Norton Removal Tool and then download and install NSS, and then import (restore) your ID Safe Data when you get ready to make the switch. Yes, the link is titled "after a problem" but it also covers switching from one Norton prodct to another as you will be doing. Have a look at it and see if you have any questions about the procedure.
BTW, when you click on the link to download NSS, you will receive a Constant Guard Protection Suite popup. Please click on the No Thanks Button and that will reveal the Get it Now Button to start the NSS download. At present I am recommending not to install the CGPS as there has been many [problems with it over the last year or so.

Presently the NSS is a clone of Norton 360 version 5 which is a 2011 product.

Yes, NSS is upgraded yearly, although on a different schedule than N 360. The latest version of N 360 is version 6 (the N 360 2012 product), while the NSS remains on version 5 (2011 product), but it will be upgraded to version 6. Although most folks do not like the delay in the upgrade, I do not mind it as it gives Norton a chance to correct any minor problems with the latest release before Comcast customers receive it.

As I said above - NSS is upgrade to the latest version annually - just later in the year than N 360 is. Norton does not use the year designation for N 360/NSS as it does for NIS/NAV, they use the version number in lieu of the year.

I tend to wait a few months (maybe longer) before I switch to the newest edition of NIS.
Currently still using NIS 2011, upgraded to newest version.
So If I were to switch to comcast today, I would in essence have NIS 2011 (as far as the security functions) rather than NIS 2012?

Yes, the current Norton Security Suite from Comcast is Version 5 - which is a clone of the N 360 2011 product. The NSS from Comcast still uses the .npm file type for ID Safe and has the same engine as NAV/NIS 2011.
I did recall you always wait a while prior to upgrading and tried to gear my initial answer to that fact. In reality, I think NSS would be a good fit for your upgrade strategy.
