Help with cloning to SSD with Ghost 15

Hello,

I'd like to clone my current harddrive (1 partition for OS and another for data) to a new Samsung SSD I recently purchased for my laptop.

My laptop (ASUS G53SW) does have two drive bays and I was able to install the SSD successfully.

After following the instructions that came with my SSD, I was able to copy the OS partition to the SSD successfuly but not the data partition. Ghost 15 (SP1)  gives me the following error when I attempt to copy it (after making about 40% in the progress bar):

Error EC8F17B3: Cannot complete copying of DATA (D:\) drive.
Error EC8F0409: Cannot copy source drive to destination location.
Error E7C3000F: Device \\?\SymantecSnapshot2 cannot read 8192 sectors starting at LBA 117731328.
Error EBAB03F1: The device is not connected. (UMI:V-281-3215-6067)

I am wondering if this has anything to do with the fact that the data drive is "logical" as opposed to primary? What settings should I choose in ghost 15 when copying the data partition?

Here is an image of my current disk management screenshot, I have deleted everything on the SSD as I wanted to start over but I thought I should try this community first! (I konw my unallocated space in my current harddrive is strange.. I plan to do a secure erase after I get everything to the SSD)

Many thanks in advance,

yuxiao3,

Try this. Do Copy drive on the OS partition only. Remove the old drive and then boot from the new drive. Let us know what happens. If you get errors, don't panic or attempt repairs. Let us know.

Hi Brian, thanks for your prompt feedback.

I cloned the C drive to the SSD and removed the original harddrive. Below is what I experienced attempting to start the computer.

1st attempt to start the computer: received the "disk read error, press control alt delete to restart"

2nd attempt: was able to boot up windows. after logging in, the desktop is empty (no windows bar, etc) and it says that the windows is not geniune. (the windows 7 I have is OEM, got computer from newegg)

3rd attempt: "disk read error, press control alt delete to restart"

4th attempt: stuck at the windows loading screen, before the windows logo materializes.

5th - 7th attempt: disc read error again.

I shouid mention that I don't have the windows installation disc... unfortunately.

Thanks,

Sean

Did you do the copy drive just like it was showing in disk management with the new drive all unallocated space?

It sounds like you made a partition with an incorrect drive letter first and thats whats causing the not genuine error.

The other error may be because the new drive is not on the same SATA connector the old drive was?

Don't try to fix anything yet.

Dave

I agree with Dave. Delete all partitions on the SSD and copy into unallocated space on the SSD. Use these Options...

Check source for file system errors
Check destination for file system errors
Don't Resize drive to fill unallocated space
Set drive active (for booting OS)
DON'T SELECT Disable SmartSector copying
DON'T SELECT Ignore bad sectors during copy
Copy MBR
Destination partition type : Primary
Drive letter : None

Shutdown, remove both drives. Install the SSD in the position the previous boot drive was occupying. Only now attempt to boot from the SSD.

Edit... The old drive must not be connected at this stage.

My ony other suggestion would be that after the system is booting correctly and before dealing with the data drive, use disk management first to expand the C drive a little.

Right now it has only 13% free space, you should give it another 10-20GB and that will still leave 30-40GB extra for the data drive.

Dave

Thanks guys. I did copy it to unallocated space the first time, but I also assigned it a letter. Perhaps that’s the problem. I’ve done the following:

1. Deleted all partitions on SSD with Gparted (didn't do security erase, it says my SSD is in a frozen state)

2. Expanded the C drive by 20G, from 78G to 98G using Gparted.

3. Used Ghost 15 to copy C drive to the SSD with the following options:

Check source for file system errors
Check destination for file system errors

Set drive active (for booting OS)

Copy MBR
Destination partition type : Primary
Drive letter : None

4. removed the old harddrive and moved the SSD to its spot.

5. When I start my windows (both with the original drive as well as with the SSD after cloning), I get the following options of operating systems that I didn’t get previously.

Windows 7

Windows Vista/windows Server 2008/Windows 7

Windows Vista/windows Server 2008/Windows 7

Windows Vista/windows Server 2008/Windows 7

I am curious why does the Windows vista/server/7 option show up 3 times? Perhaps it has to do with imaging to drive too many times?

6. Check disk was performed before start up. No errors were found

7. after the log-on screen, windows was stuck at “preparing your desktop” for about 5 minutes.

8. I then got a message saying “you must restart your computer to apply these changes” right after the log-in screen, before anything appeared on the desktop.

9. After restarting, I got the same desktop as I did before: empty and says windows is not genuine.

Please help!

Thanks,

Sean

Sean,

Don't worry about those multiple boot entries. They are a Ghost "side effect" and can be fixed later. I think I know why you are still getting the drive letter issue (Windows not genuine) but let's fix it. Ask me later about the drive letter issue.

Boot from the Ghost 15 CD
Analyze
Open Command Shell Window
Type "regedit" (without the "") and press Enter
Click to Select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Click File, Load Hive
Click the drop down arrow in "Look in"
You will see your Windows partition has a non C: drive letter. Lets say the drive letter is F:
Browse to F:\Windows\System32\config
Select SYSTEM and click Open
In Key Name type ABC
OK
Click the + next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE in the left pane
Click the + next to ABC in the left pane
Select MountedDevices in the ABC group
Press Delete on the keyboard
Yes
Select ABC in the left hand pane
Click File, Unload Hive
Yes
Close Registry Editor and the Command Window
Exit Ghost 15 and remove the CD
Boot into Windows

Hi Brian,

Could you please direct me on how to create ghost boot CD (or usb)? My SSD did not come with the CD (event though it says it does on the box!!), I had to download it.

Sean,

If you have downloaded the ISO, burn it with ImgBurn...

http://www.imgburn.com

If you don't have the ISO...

Just a comment about your drive letter  issue. You deleted the partitions on your SSD with Gparted.

Dave and I have reported that if you don't delete the partitions with Disk Management in the multi Copy Drive scenario then subsequent Copies won't boot. Although we saw a different error than you saw. This only happens with Win7 and not with XP or Win8.

It's a very similar problem.  When we were doing it we were doing the first copy into unallocated space.

Here, the previous copy was done into a partition with the wrong letter.  Deleting the partition offline didn't clear or change the disk signature so the next copy drive retained that incorrect letter.

Dave

Brian/Dave,

After following your directions, I was able to boot into Windows 7 without any problems!

I guess the next step is to get everything from the DATA drive to the SSD?

Thanks so much for your help thsu far.

Sean

Sean,

Open msconfig and delete the incorrect boot items.

Reconnect the old HD, boot the SSD, create a partition on the SSD and copy/paste your data across. Don't use Ghost.

Questions?

Could you please be more specific about how to delete the incorrect boot items? Are you referring to the "windows vista/windows...." thing?

How do i get to the screen that will allow me to delete them?

Also, for copying over the data drive, do I need to create an logical drive to match the old drive?

msconfig, Boot tab, select the incorrect entries one by one, Delete.

Regarding the partition. Logical or Primary as it doesn't matter. I prefer Primary.

Hi Brian,

I am having issues copying files from the old data drive to a new partition.

At some point during the copying process, it seems like the laptop no longer recognizes the old harddrive giving me errors such as "xx file is no longer locate din this drive."

I am also unable to "shut down" my computer; it gets stuck at the "shutting down" screen. I get a blue screen of death after a while...

I was able to move just some of the files I needed and erase the rest. The computer seems to be working fine now but for some reason I can't access most websites.

I can access google fine but I can't access any other websites (e.g. yahoo, espn, etc)

My internet connection is fine as I can access all of those websites with my ipad and other computers.

Any thoughts?
