Helping a friend with a firewall issue

So I have a friend who is running Norton Internet Security version 20.4.0.40.  Now I am not sure if this matters, but he got this from Comcast form their site.

Norton is installed on all 4 of his computers (3 Windows 7 and 1 XP).  The one system is like the server while the other computers access it.

Every now and then when he leaves them all on, the next day none of the laptops can access the desktop server.  Programs will not connect nor can they access any of the shared documents or folders.  Rebooting does nothing as well.  Only fix is to turn off the firewall and then turn it on and then everything goes back to working fine.

So something in the firewall.

I had him install a small remote program and in the firewall listing it has "Allow" all access, yet when this occurs the firewall blocks it.  Again, only turning off the firewall and then turning back on will it then allow me to remote in.  His programs; same thing.  None of them can talk to the desktop, only turning the firewall off and on then every laptop runs just fine.

Can updates to the firewall cause this?  It does not happen often; I think twice in the past 3 months.  But it is annoying, especially when all the programs are set up in the firewall to "Allow" full access.  We even had one of the program tech support go over all the settings to allow their software to work and it still blocks the traffic until we do the turn off/on.

So any suggestions what we can do?

Hi agile13

Try using the trust control in the smart firewall by clicking the Norton icon, click settings, click network, click smart firewall, click trust control, click ok for the window on top then on the left hand side there is a plus and minus sign to add and remove devices.

Another access point is, click the Norton icon, click advanced, underneath Network protection, click network security map, click ok for the window on top then on the left hand side there is a plus and minus sign to add and remove devices.

Set the devices to shared and full trust.

When a programme is set to allow in the firewall, the fire wall is not operating correctly for that programme so if you set the auto selection and then if you get any problems report them to norton on the link below.

Norton evaluates false positives so if you think your getting a false positive please click on the link below to submit it with the relevant details to access the file.

Hi agile13,

If your friend in fact have Norton from Comcast it is called Norton Security Suite and since it is a clone N 360, the settings locations are a bit different than intesec suggested.

OK thank you to both of you.  Going to be heading to his place this Thursday; will try these and see from there.  I will also checkin here to let you know how it goes.
