Hey, all. I got a Low Memory warning. (evidently only 27 MB!) How do I create more memory? I only have 2 extensions on my PC so I know that’s not the problem. IDK what to delete to create more space, or what not to delete to avoid screwing up my PC even more? I’ve scanned the system, have no viruses, etc., and I’ve defragged which said it’s been optimized and freed up like 200 MBs.
A “Low Memory” warning on your PC can be confusing because it often refers to one of two different things: RAM (short-term working memory) or Disk Space (long-term storage).
Based on your mention of defragging and freeing up 200 MB, it sounds like you are actually critically low on Disk Space (storage). Having only 27 MB left is extremely dangerous for a modern PC and can cause it to freeze or crash because Windows needs “free space” to function .
- Safely Freeing Up Space (Storage)
You can reclaim gigabytes of space without touching your personal files or breaking your PC by using built-in Windows tools:
- Run Disk Cleanup (as Admin):
- Search for “Disk Cleanup” in the Start menu.
- Click Clean up system files .
- Look for “Windows Update Cleanup” or “Previous Windows installations”—these are often many gigabytes and are safe to delete if your PC is currently running fine .
- Use Storage Sense: In Windows 10/11, go to Settings > System > Storage. Turn on Storage Sense to automatically clear temporary files and empty your Recycle Bin .
- Clear Browser Cache: Even with only 2 extensions, browsers like Chrome or Edge store massive “caches” of website data. Clearing this in your browser settings can free up hundreds of megabytes instantly .
- Disable Hibernation: If you rarely use the “Hibernate” feature, you can reclaim several gigabytes (roughly the size of your RAM) by opening a Command Prompt as Administrator and typing
powercfg -h off.
- If it Really is a RAM Issue
If the warning explicitly says “Your computer is low on memory” while you are running programs, it refers to RAM .
- Check Task Manager: Press
Ctrl + Shift + Esc. Click the Memory column to see which specific app is hogging resources. If a single program is using most of it, close that specific program . - Restart Your PC: This is the most effective way to clear RAM. It flushes everything out and starts fresh .
- Virtual Memory: Windows uses a “Page File” on your hard drive as overflow RAM. If your hard drive is full (as yours seems to be), this overflow has nowhere to go, triggering the warning . Freeing up disk space (Step 1) usually fixes this.
What NOT to delete
- Windows Folder: Never touch anything inside
C:\Windows. - System32: Do not delete this; it will make your PC unbootable .
- Program Files: Use the “Uninstall a program” tool in Settings instead of deleting folders here to avoid leaving “orphaned” files that clog your system.
Can you check your File Explorer and tell me if your C: drive has a red bar over it? This will confirm if the issue is storage or RAM.

Looks as though the OP has mistaken memory as being storage. Many people still do that. @EdwardC_Herrel How old is this computer and what operating system are you using?
