I have Norton Security with Backup latest version installed on my Win7 Desktop computer.
According to the MS Resource Monitor file NSBU.exe is using as much as 100 % of my CPU and it brings my computer to a standstill.
This started about a week to 10 days ago and I have to reboot to do anything. Even then I can only use my computer for a minute or two before it slows again.
When I tried to kill the process in the task Monitor it said I did not have the privilege needed to stop it.
Is anyone else having this problem? I saw where some had this problem when they were using a remote desktop but I am not using one.
When I looked up HxTsr.exe (which also showed up in the resource monitor repeatedly) I found a suggestion to use the System File Checker Tool. I found this info at:
I recently had issues with high CPU use that I traced to a problem with my nVidia drivers. I would see up to 98% total CPU use with no individual process taking more than 29%. I uninstalled all the nVidia software and just loaded the drivers I need. That brought the total CPU usage back down to 3 - 5%.
Still have same old problem with this POS software. Posted here and contacted Norton repeatedly, same old lame customer service. Computer is constant brick with 100% HDD usage caused by nsbu.exe. I've updated and still same old crap even today. I'll be deleting product and using alternative products. Been long time Norton customer but paying a premium for protection and then that protection ends up rendering computer useless is just not acceptable. See ya Norton.
Did you thoroughly remove the previous security program you were using by using the removal tool from that company? Are you running any other security program now? What Norton product are you using and what is the version please? Also what O/S and what bit?
I am having this same problem. There is no set of specific actions or running programs that lead to the 100% CPU usage (I also get frequency readings of up to, and sometimes over 150%) but once it occurs the computer is useless until if finishes. In addition to the 100% CPU usage, and off the charts frequency readings, there is also a 100% disk usage that accompanies the problem. I have been dealing with it for months now, but I've reached the limit of my patience. Even restarting doesn't seem to correct the issue. You need to fix this or I will cancel my subscription use another antivirus supplier. Norton does me no good if at any moment my computer can start behaving like it has a virus. You are causing symptoms that are the same as the viruses you are supposed to protect me from which is a perfect example of irony. I'm paying for irony... :\
Norton is designed to run background tasks and scans when your system is idle. What you are seeing is normal. If you are saying that it will not return control to you when you start using the computer again, that is not normal.
Something else that may be happening. If you have only recently installed Norton, it can take a number of days to get all scans and maintenance tasks completed. How long this can take depends on how often you allow the system to go idle so the work can be completed. After these initial tasks are completed, you should see much better performance. Maybe you can leave the computer on overnight to allow everything to run.
There is a new update to Norton products that may help. See the product announcement here. Even if it does not ask for a System Restart, you should do so just to help get all updates fully set up.
I have a dell m6700 precision with 32gb ram and a quad core i7 processor. Any time my system is idle, Norton kicks on and hijacks the system with 100% HDD usage. The system crawls to a complete standstill with Norton. Unless this problem is fixed pronto, I'm uninstalling and requesting a full refund of my multi year coverage. When you pay a premium the product should improve your system, not render it useless. It is very frustrating and borderline fraudulent that this is a known issue that remains unresolved. Shame on you Norton!!
We've released an Auto-Protect HotFix that includes a fix for High CPU/Disk Usage. I recommend that you run LiveUpdate and restart your system as prompted to install the hotfix. Once installed, please let us know if the issue still occurs. Thanks.
Vernon G: I am still experiencing high CPU usage on my computer by file NSBU.exe and I have to keep rebooting it to get anything done. Why is it taking so long to fix this problem?
Your tech people keep asking us by private messages to contact them. Don't you even have a clue what is causing this problem? It has gone on entirely way too long and this is inexcusable.

I will probably be switching to another brand of security software if this problem continues even though I have used Norton software for over 10 years. If I do switch I will not be switching back to any Norton product. As you can tell I am quite upset by the incompetence of the Norton people to fix this problem. One even had the audacity to say that it is a natural problem and we would just have to live with it.

My computer has behaved properly for almost 2 days now but this morning it is back to high CPU usage by file NSBU.exe. I have run LiveUpdate and done a reboot. My computer is now working properly with low CPU usage by file NSBU.exe but I don't know how long this will last.
I have sent you both private messages requesting the steps that you took that led to the spike, the applications that were running during the spike, and steps to collect logs. Any information would be helpful. Please check your inbox when you get a chance. Thank you.

Exact same issue. Not much information on this particular issue anywhere. Leads me to believe this is very new and not many people have experienced yet. NSBU.exe takes up 100% of CPU and brings everything to a standstill. Norton needs to take note and fix this ASAP.
