How can I stop Norton 360 shortcut from appearing on my desktop after every restart?

How can I stop Norton 360 shortcut from appearing on my desktop after every restart?

It only occurs on my W7 system.

[Edit: Clarified title]

You're most welcome!! One final thought is, IF, the hardware on the Windows 7 computer will run Windows 10 you can update to Windows 10 totally free as an option. Windows 7 is no longer supported by Microsoft going forward. Use the media creation tool and follow prompts. Your Windows 7 product that is already activated will activate Windows 10. Good luck.

Yes it is SP1. I had to bring an old machine back to life, and the only OS I had available was W7.
It is really not a big issue, just a bit annoying.

Thanks for your interest.

Kelle

I'm stumped with this one. The only thing I can imagine is whether your install is at least service pack 1 and some setting in Windows is causing the issue. I'm out of ideas since its been years that I've had a machine on Windows 7.

SA

SA, no change after log out from other devices.

The issue occurred directly after a clean installation of W7 followed by a Norton installation.
No other devices were connected to the network at the time.

Kelle

Its a Windows issue not Norton. I haven't used Windows 7 in a few years, but did have the issue of icon repopulation on the desktop on a number of occassions. It can be due to profile synching aka, being logged into another computer where the roaming profile will synch with another computer. Log out of all devices you have access to, log into the one with the issue, lets see if the roaming group policy is synching.

SA

SA, your latest suggestion doesn’t help either.
I believe this is a Norton issue, not a Windows one.

Kell

Delete the Norton icon on the desktop. Set the service to start "manually" not totally disabled and restart. The service is mainly used for printers and network sharing, it will start when a print request is sent within Windows when needed.

SA

No that didn't do it, and it has to run due to the network.

Thanks anyway.

Kelle. Give this last suggestion a shot. Click the START button, in the box at the bottom, enter "msconfig". Click on msconfig.exe (which launches System Configuration), click on the "services" tab. Scroll down the list and deactivate the "Server" service. Click "ok" and reboot computer. Lets see if that takes care of your issue.

Update

After a proper installation of winfilefolder certificate the troubleshooter now runs, but no errors were found.
I now officially give up. I can live with the annoying shortcut.
Thank you all for your interest and support

Yes W7 SP1
Rename software distribution backup folders did not help, the Troubleshooter won't run.

Hello again. Is your install of Windows 7 also Service Pack 1?  Error code: 0x800B0109 indicates a file used by Windows Updates is corrupted or missing. Use step #2 in this guide to correct that issue and let us know your results. Run the File / Folder Troubleshooter again, lets see what your results are there as well.

SA

Couldn't run the File and Folder Troubleshooter.
Message:
Not able to verify troubleshooter integrity
Error code: 0x800B0109
Tried sfc /scannow, but Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

You should probably report this bug by instant messaging one of the Gurus of the forum and see if they can send it along to their  Norton contacts or help you better than I can.

Good Luck.

Please don't PM the Gurus for support.  That is not what PMs are for.  Please stick to the forums for all support related issues.

Thank you.

Hello Kelle. Give the suggestions in this Microsoft article a shot, please let us know your results.

Edited: There is a system readiness tool for Windows 7 that does much the same as DISM does on Windows 10. Please read this for guidance.

No, just Norton.

Are there any other icons that reappear or just Norton?

Hopefully other members here who have Windows 7 might be able to help sort out this issue. I would guess there is a bug in Norton when rebooting to reproduce the icon in Win7 but not in Win10.

Delete from folder desktop does not help. The shortcut reappears after reboot.
