You can actually classify the updates that you get through LiveUpdate in to two different types.
1. Protection updates
2. Product/program updates
Protection updates are your Virus Definitions updates that protect your computer from the latest viruses and unknown
security threats.
Product/program updates are minor improvements to your installed
product. These differ from product upgrades, which are newer versions of entire
products. Program updates are usually created to extend the operating system or
hardware compatibility, adjust a performance issue, or fix program errors. Product updates are released once we identify the issues and fixes that we need to address. For example, updating your Norton 360 V2.0 to V2.5 is a product update.
Product upgrades are not usually delivered over the LiveUpdate mechanism. Usually, you will have to wait for an official announcement from Symantec to know when the product releases. We will also make an announcement in the forum as soon as the product goes live.
Although 360 V3 is setup to uninstall V2 before installing V3 there are a number of contributors on the forum that suggest using the Norton Removal Tool (NRT) priod to V3 install. At the time of this post the page that has the step by step instructions for using the NRT was down due to maintenance however all information listed herein came from http://community.norton.com/norton/board/message?board.id=Norton_360&thread.id=9413&jump=true and will probably be listed for some time to come.
** Please note that using the Norton Removal Tool is setup to remove ALL Norton products installed on the system it is run on. So if you are thinking about using the removal tool please be sure to backup all necessary items.
Just to let you know that using the link to download and install V3 gives the user the option to save their settings and should automatically save your subscription time.
I was able to find the link and upgrade to v. 3. I did not use NRT. But v.3 upgrade first uninstalls Norton v.2 anyways. I did not notice any problems. The install was (surprisingly) simple requiring only 3 clicks - run, restart, verify product key.
So far so good.
I will wait and see if I run into any problems before going thru again with NRT and a reinstall.
Just to let you know for 360 there are a few threads where re-installing does not seem to be the fix for a couple of issues. As an example there are a few programs that some people have noticed that do not play well with the current version of 360, (3.0.0.134 I believe) that currently has a workaround and a couple of other threads(issues) that I have forgotten the specifics of.
So if you wish post your issue or if your like me just go ahead and try dealing with it first yourself should you have any issues pop up :-) There's always a community of contributors waiting to help out!
I am currently running 360 v2.5.0.5. At the moment it is stable, as long as I do not activate automatic backup, or attempt to use the internal link to reach chat support. (You and I have interacted recently on these issues and the freezing of 360 v3, when I run my CAD program.) I have also experienced random instabilities (in 360v2), which I believe are triggered by something in Liveupdate activities: 360v2 suddenly goes OTL and I get the red 'x' in the tray.
Anyway, I am thinking about upgrading to 360v3 again and I know you have been using it. Other than the online backup .dll issue, has it been performing solidly for you? If so, I'll try 360v3 again.
For the most. I have a few issues, the largest being that it keeps forgetting some of the log-ins in the Identity Safe feature and I've had about four or five instances where a window would freeze and I would not be able to open the main window of 360 (UI as I believe it has been refered to in some threads) and I would have to do either a warm or cold reboot to get back full control of 360.
Also an instance of backup not being able to complete the backup with a reference to an error message. And a duplicate backup set named set from V2 that was showing up in V3 (I don't recall if it was showing up off of the Main 360 window or not). Plus an issue that had existed with the One Click Support feature that Yogesh_Mohan had reported had to with running IE8 beta and was easily solved (at least for myself) by reverting to IE7 and does not appear to exist with the IE8 (again at least not for myself) wide release.
I know that Symantec is working on at least a couple of smaller issues with backup and I assume there will be a patch that may contain fixes to other issues in the upcoming update. Whenever that may be :)
Version 3 had however fixed some smaller issues such as the Help & Support feature now works for me without me having to manually initiate it from windows explorer. And of course more control over the Network Secutity Map. There are, of course, other features and tweaks of the program that have changed the way it acts and looks.
Your system hardware, software and just plain luck will of course dictate the behaviour of how the program runs and other issues that you may or may not experience <grin>.
If you wish I can advise you when my I notice my system updated from version 3.0.0.134. Just hit me up with a private message as a reminder if you wish to do so.
Thanks for the reply. Sounds like the little issues are similar to v2. I may just wait for v3 to come out on DVD, or is it Blue-ray..... :)
This morning 360v2 decided to turn off Intrusion Protection, all by it's self. These computers are growing up and getting so smart.
Anyway, that is one of the repeat issues I see in v2.
Is it possible that beta IE8 left something mangled in the registry, or an incompatible .dll, etc... when we reverted to IE7. Seems I've seen beta IE8 mentioned a handful of times and you indicated that you had tried and the beta and reverted to IE7.
I tried IE8 for a few minutes (time not really relevent), then realized it wouldn't allow access to Identity Safe and Log-ins. Norton support said 360v2 was not compatible with beta IE8, so I downgraded to IE7. That was very shortly after I upgraded from NIS2008, to 360v2 AND around the time instabilities began. (maybe coincidental(?), but a thought.)
By the way, is this the right thread for this discussion?

[ I'll buy it on any media except for 8-track or laser disc :) ]
I have seen a few threads (I think at least one with a solution) about Intrusion Protection turning itself off.
I don't have enough information/knowledge to answer the possible issues between switching from one product to another, upgrading and running against a beta in conjunction. My only problem was that IE8 kept taking over the phishing protection.
I think support would have to officially say that as IE8 (now out of beta) is being tested against 360 (at least) version 3 and unknown or untested instabilities may exist between IE8 and version 2.
Your right, this got a little off the original topic. If you wish I'll catch you on one of the other threads of if you happen to have other threads that you need/wish to begin. Unless of course you need to discuss the network map :)
Regards to you as well,
