How do i completely turn of Norton IS Utilities?

Hi,  I recently purchased Norton IS + Utilities 2011 but beyond Silent mode I can not figure out how to completely turn off Norton?

I need to turn off Antivirus software apps when installing apps or using my music DAW software..

If indeed Norton cannot be disabled fully manually beyond completely removing it then it is due for complete removal/refund.

Thanks,

Rex

Hi Rex,

Welcome to the Norton Community. A lot of software recommends disabling your Antivirus software first but in many if not most cases that is not really required. In times past, you were almost guaranteed to have problems installing software with anti-virus still active but as anti-virus software has improven over the years it is not really necessary in most cases.

I am a software engineer and I very rarely run into software which actually fails to install correctly because NIS is still active. Even Windows updates install just fine. The only time I disable auto-protect by default is for a really major upgrade like a new Windows Service Pack (SP).

If you do want to disable auto-protect to install software, be cautious and physically disconnect from the Internet first and only install software that you absolutely trust 100%.

Again security software such as NIS has gotten much better over the years and so I recommend leaving auto-protect turned ON in most cases. At that point if you attempt to install software which is questionable, auto-protect will still be running to alert you.

Why do you want to disable NIS when you are using your DAW software?

Best wishes.

Allen

Thanks for your reply Allen,

I want a simple answer not a heap of question, I ask you ask...,you ask,  no one gets an answer.

Its none of your business or anyone else - as Myself  a purchaser in good faith of  NIS 2011  if I wish to completely turn it off while I play a cpu intensive 3D game, enter my Bank account info or Visa, Mastercard # .

Again, I want Norton to answer my question.. Can Norton do this?

If I'm installing drivers that request turning off AntiVirus.. I want to simply switch it OFF. period, .

Can I do this with NIS?

Typo

OFF!  Do it or not?

Hi Rex,

First thing you should know is that this is a user-user forum. I am not a Symantec employee and if you are going to cop an attitude then I'm done here.

That said, we get all manner of users on here which ranges from completely inexperienced all the way to the other end of the spectrum of advanced users in terms of computer knowledge, the Norton product and the malware world.

I would be remiss in my responsibilities both as a Norton product expert and someone who actually cares if I did not raise the obvious questions and provide guidance and recommendations to help prevent the very problems that we spend much of our FREE time trying to help people solve when they come here!

Lastly, you should know there are times when you have to ask questions in order to provide a proper and accurate answer.

As amrobx said you cannot just turn OFF the entire Norton software. If you could do this so easily, then so could malware!

You want to disable auto-protect, do so. You can also disable things like Browser Protection, Smart Firewall, Download Insight and other things. Is it recommended? A resounding NO. Do so at your own risk.

Honestly, it is not realistic for you to think all your questions can be answered accurately without being willing to answer even a single question yourself. You come here seeking guidance and wanting to get your questions answered, do yourself a favor and do not respond so negatively when you are asked a few simple questions in return.

Best wishes.

Hi Rex,

Allow me to give an example. You want to install certain software which you are 100% convinced is safe yet NIS alerts on that program when you try to install it.

There are other more proper ways to solve that issue than attempting to completely disable the very protection that I would presume you got NIS for in the first place.

I don't know if this is what prompted the question of how to disable NIS or not, just giving you one example of reasons other users have given us in the past for similar questions to what you have raised.

Best wishes.

Allen

Thanks for you replies and time,

I don't know how to turn off browsing protection temporarily? i.e. Pop ups asking me if I want Norton to save my passwords for my banking or credit cards.  Feels like a peering over the shoulder pop up  I could do without.

These functions should be more intuitive.

Are you aware that SILENT mode (qv in HELP) suppresses stuff like that eg for while gaming?

You can even set it on for a full day now and not just for some hours. There's a lot of stuff under Miscellaneous settings if you care to look.

If Identity safe popups are a problem, you should be able to go into miscellaneous settings and turn that off.

Hi Rex,

These are more specific questions which are easily resolved. Your initial question was hot to disable NIS entirely to install software and all I was trying to do was point out that this is not necessary the vast majority of the time. Again even Windows updates almost always installs without a hitch when NIS is fully active and functioning. 3rd party software may recommend to disable your anti-virus but this is truly not necessary except in unusual circumstances. Times have changed a lot. over the years and so has technology. Typically NIS will not cause a problem unless you are installing software which is actiing suspiciously (an example being keylogger software, etc) in which case NIS will step in and do something. Another example would be if software which tries to make modifications to core system files....

Again if you really want to disable what you refer to as anti-virus, it is up to you. All I did was state that this is not typically necessary. But if you want to then disable auto-protect by right clicking the NIS icon in the task tray and select "Disable Antivirus Auto Protect".

But for your more specific questions, Hugh and Delphinium gave two suggestions. Silent Mode kicks in when you are running a full screen application or game and suppresses popups from NIS. Check out Settings > Misc. Settings > Silent Mode Settings. Full screen detection automatically turns ON silent mode. As Hugh mentioned you can also turn this on manually for up to 1 full day.

If you do not like Identity Safe then this is easily turned OFF. This feature is there to store login information for websites in which you have an account. This feature was added by Symantec and is very popular among a majority of users. In case you were not aware of it, NIS stores login information in encrypted format so no one will be able to view the information contained therein.

However if you do not want to use this feature it is very easily turned OFF by going to Settings > Web Settings > Identity Safe and set to OFF. You will no longer be prompted.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.
