How Do I Create Drive Image Using Norton Save & Restore 10?

I have Norton Save Restore 10 on my Vista Home Premium system. It came pre-installed on my system (Dell Inspiron 530s) along with Vista and several other applications. I have added two 500 GB external hard drives to my system and am trying to configure S&R to do a drive image backup (Using the Norton Ghost Functionality of S&R10 instead of a backup in backup/restore format). Supposedly “S&R 10” contains the same functionality as Ghost 10 so I figured I should be able to do this. My plan was to copy complete drive images to each external HD so I would have a complete drive image on two different external hard drives at any given time.

I can’t figure out how to do this however. If I go to “tasks” in Norton Save & Restore, that only gives me the option to “Run or Manage Backups” or to do a “One Time Backup”. These are apparently in backup/restore format and not drive image format however. The only other option I can find is to go to “Tools” then “Copy My Hard Drive” which I assumed provides the drive image copy.

“Copy My Hard Drive” does not allow me the capability of copying my entire hard drive however. It only lets me copy one logical drive at a time (such as the “C:” drive).  “My Computer” has several logical drives which need copying for a complete drive image however. For example, there is also a “D:” drive and an “E:” drive. Since I apparently can’t copy multiple drives using the “Copy My Hard Drive” function, I can copy only one of the logical drives on my system to the external hard drive at a time.

For example, I can copy the “C:” drive but not the “D:” or “E:” drives. Furthermore, there are other Vista folders (such as “Desktop”, “Documents”, etc.) that don’t get picked up in a copy that includes only the “C:” drive.

So, can someone tell me how to use Norton Save & Restore 10 to do a drive image copy on my computer? Can what I am trying to do be done? If so…how? Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Save & Restore 2.0 does not have the ability to do drive images.  You would need Ghost 14.0 (latest version of Ghost) to actually do a drive image.  S&R 2.0 will only do file copies as you have found out.  Sorry.

Hi Mike72T,

If I understand correctly, you want to create backup of your hard drive(which has multiple partitions) and save it as a single backup file on your external hard drive.

Unfortunately, you cannot do this with either Norton Save and Restore or Norton Ghost 10/12/14. You can define a backup of your computer using "Backup My Computer" option. However, it creates seperate .v2i files(backups) for each of the partitions.

When you perform Copy Drive, it creates an exact copy of your drive on sector by sector basis. It does not create a single file with the copy of the drive. For Copy Drive also, you can copy only one partition at a time. If you have multiple partitions, you have to copy them one by one starting with the primary bootable partition.

This feature is available with Norton Ghost 2003 (which is no longer available and not supported) where you could boot from a bootfloppy or  bootCD of Ghost and create clone of your hard drive. Just you need to start the clone operation and it would copy the entire drive to another drive.

Let me know if you have any questions.
