How do I disable Smart Firewall?

Greetings,

I can't download email because "Smart" Firewall is blocking it. I've already have asked how to check email, but I haven't gotten an answer yet, so I need to disable Smart Firewall.

The problem is that after I turn off Smart Firewall, I can't turn on Windows Firewall, because it says "These settings are being managed by vendor application Norton Internet Security".

So, how do I turn off Smart Firewall?

Thanks,

Shane.

Shane:

Have you actually tried the fixes that cgoldman provided in the first thread you had?  Have you reset Internet Explorer?

You can only disable the firewall.  You can't turn it off completely.  Try adding the WLM exe in the program rules in the firewall.  Check to see what Norton is blocking under history.

cgoldman provided two links (no fixes). If you read the thread, you will see that I tried the steps.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Live\Mail\wlmail.exe is added automatically when I try to check for mail. The Access is set to "Allow".

Norton doesn't say it's blocking anything. I've attached the "Firewall - Activities" section of the history. Make sure to rename the file to "Recent History.csv" first.

Thanks,

Shane.

Everything in the log is outbound.  Are there no inbound entries?  If you go to the program rule, click on modify.  The program rule should read "Allow, direction in/out, computer any, communications:any, protocol tcp and udp."  If your rule does not say that, click modify again and go through the tabs making the necessary connecrtions.

If it does say exactly that, then Norton has allowed the program correctly and something else is interfering.  Then you would need to check email settings, security settings in Windows.  In Internet Explorer go to internet options>programs>set programs.  Make sure that WLM is ticked as your default email and that access has been allowed.

Greetings,

The description says...

Allow, Direction: In/Out, Computer: Any, Communications: Any, Protocol: All, Tracking: Create a log entry

There are no inbound entries in Recent History. Could they be in another category? Or does Recent History include everything (recent)?

Thanks,

Shane.

Hi Shane,

Recent history will cover all recent events but if something further back is occurring then it may not show there. You can also select Firewall Activities and see if anything is there.

Have you made firewall changes in the past? You are indicating that WLM works if you disable Smart Firewall. I use WLM on my test laptop and the default program rule created automatically by NIS has always worked just fine.

I would suggest doing a firewall reset. You can do this from Settings > Web Settings > Advanced Settings > Firewall Reset. Be aware that any firewall changes you have made will be lost. Give this a try and see if WLM works properly.

Best wishes.

Allen

Greetings,

I found the reset option under Settings > Network Settings > Advanced Settings > Firewall Reset. WLM never worked since I installed NIS. But I reset the firewall, and it's working now.

Thanks,

Shane.

Hi Shane,

Sorry I said Web Settings. You are correct it is Network Settings. I participate so much on the forums here that I mistakenly typed Web Settings. :smileywink:

I am happy that this has resolved the problem for you. :smileyhappy:

Best wishes.
