How do I download the new patch if Liveupdate doesn't work

The title says it.
I read in many topics about the new patch but my Liveupdate just won't work.

By that i mean NEVER.
Not by deleting ncodefs or removing everything from the register etc.

Is there someone who has a solution?

(further I have no trouble with NIS 2009)

Can you tell us what happens when you run LiveUpdate? Do you receive any error code?

It says liveupdate cannot connect to the live update server and the error code is: 8921,229

I also just tried to download a test package from the liveupdate server with youre browser but that doesn't work either and shows a Webpage does not exist page (ping test live update also failes while the one with google works problemless)

Download from here for 32bit windows and here for 64 bit windows. This is the latest update for NIS 2009.

Have you tried the steps in the document 8921,229 ? Also please let us know if you have any other firewall program installed.

The link provided by Znmng will help you in downloading the definitions updates. But keep in mind that it downloads only the virus definition and the new build will not be available through that. We need to resolve the 8921,229 issue to obtain the latest build.

Yes i followed al the steps on that page a few times but it still doesn't work.

Try the steps given below.

1. Click on Start.

2. Click on Control panel.

3. Click on Network Connections.

4. Right click on your Network.

5. Click on Properties.

6. Under general tab, Double-click on "Internet protocol (TCP/IP)

7. select the option "Obtain DNS Server address automtically.

8. Click on OK.

That is already Obtained automatic according to the properties of my network connection.

Now try the steps given below to flush DNS.

-Click Start>Run, in the Run dialogue box, type cmd and click OK.
-Type ipconfig/flushdns and hit the enter key on your keyboard.
-Restart the computer.
-Run LiveUpdate.

Also please let me know if you have any other firewall programs installed in your computer.

I've followed youre steps but it didn't work

(I have no other firewalls installed)

The reference page for the most current virusdefs downloads is here.

Hi Jojas-

Here is something to try to see if your DNS configuration is the cause of the problem.

You can temporarily make changes to use the OpenDNS service for performing server name resolution - see the steps here.  Be sure to note down your original configuration values so you can reverse the steps at the end of the test.

After making the changes, please perform the browser download test and the ping test again and share the results with us here.

Thanks,

It still shows the this page not exist error with the download an with the ping test it says the server doesn't exist

But I found something that was a little weird:
After i changed the DNS adress i closed al the windows like in the instructions and after I tested the file download and the ping it was back on get DNS adress automatically while i didn't changed anything in the meantime.

Hi Jojas-

First off, if you have not done it can you please run a full scan (not a quick scan) of your system.  This step will give us some initial confidence that you don't have malware that is actively trying to hijack your connection attempts to the LiveUpdate server.  Please give me confirmation you have completed the full scan.

Next, can you please try the following steps so we can gather more information about your networking situation:

1) from a command prompt window: type "ipconfig /all". Copy + paste the output into a reply message to me.

2) from a command prompt window: type "nslookup liveupdate.symantecliveupdate.com." (<-- include the trailing dot).  Copy + paste the output into a reply message to me.

3) from a command prompt window: type "tracert liveupdate.symantecliveupdate.com"  Copy + paste the output into a reply message to me.

4) make the OpenDNS changes to your TCP/IP settings and click OK to all the properties dialogs.

5) repeat steps 1, 2, 3 above and copy + paste all output in a reply message.

Thanks,

Matt,

I can't connect to LU from my laptop to get the latest version of NIS 2009. I also can;t get email unless I turn Email/Message scanning off. I  changed the DNS settings and still have no luck. I can C&P the cmd results if needed. Can you help me? Tech support has not been unable to help me. My 2 desktops with XP have no issues. Thanks.

You can download NIS09 directly from Symantec’s website. It is version 16.1

Have you checked the Dial-up entries and LAN Settings in IE ?  If not, try the following steps:

1. Start Internet Explorer.
2. Click Tools > Internet Options.
3. Click the Connections tab.
4. Look in the "Dial-up and Virtual Private Network settings" box.

  • If there are no entries in the box, skip to line 6.
  • If there are entries in the box, go on to line 5.

5. Look at each entry that is in the "Dial-up and Virtual Private Network settings" box. Remove any that you are sure that you no longer use. If you are not sure, contact your Internet service provider for help.
6. Under Local Area Network(LAN) Settings, click LAN settings.
7. Under Automatic Configuration, check Automatically detect settings box.
8. Click OK.
9. Restart the computer. After the computer restarts, run LiveUpdate.

You can also get the latest patch by downloading and installing the Trialware from the Norton Downloads Web site.

It will be better if you use the Norton Removal Tool before installing the Trialware(latest patch). Running the Norton removal tool 2-3 times will do no harm.

I have followed all of the above suggestions, got the latest patch and still no LU. I am still unable to access email unless I turn off email/message scanning. My internet is working perfectly and my previous AV (not Norton) had no trouble updating. Also I can’t remote connect with tech support but I can connect with my other computers with Logmein.

Please check and let us know if you are using SSL(Secured Socket layer) for accessing your emails.

I had a similar problem in my computer when it got infected by some Trojans(I was not using any Firewall at that time as it slows down the downloading capacity) and I was unable to connect to any of the Security Web sites (Symantec, Mcafee, Panda..etc) to run the online scan. I worked out myself using certain tools (free to download) and done a cleanup, removing all threats from my computer. After that, I installed my Norton program. So I think, some trojan is preventing your computer from the communicating with the Symantec Web site. I would suggest you to download and run TrendMicro Hijackthis to check this.

1. Download, save the installation file and install Hijackthis.

2. Open the Hijackthis program, click Do a System Scan only.

3. When it completes. click Save log. Save the log file(text file) in desktop.

4. In the Web page for Log File Analyzer, copy and paste the contents of Log file.

5. Click Analyze.

6. Make a note of the entries that are marked as "X" (rated as not safe).

7. Run the scan once again from the Hijackthis program, check the entires which you have noted in line 6.

8. Click Fix.

(Repeat the same procedure and make sure that there are no threats remaining)

You can uninstall Hijackthis from Add/remove programs after this. Then check LU is working or whether you are able to establish remote connection with Tech Support.

Hijackthis was clear. I had Avira before I installed NIS 2009 and had no issues getting updates from their server. Also, not using SSL.
