Our office computer recently had a hard drive malfunction. Out of the blue it stopped booting. That same system was set up with the Norton Ghost daily backups onto an external HDD.
So right after that failure I thought to restore data from the Ghost backup. Here's the steps that I performed:
1. Downloaded & burned a CD out of the Symantec Recovery Disk from here:
2. Booted to that CD and went through steps to recover data.
3. But when the recovery software asked me to provide the drive to take backup from, it could not see my external HDD. I use Iomega external hard drive, that was plugged in and powered on. But whatever I did, I could not select it. It's as if it wasn't even there.
So is there a trick here that I'm not aware of?
PS. Luckily we were able to restore the failed hard drive using other methods. (I.e. our tech guy did boot sector repair and it fixed it. Evidently the RAID card went bad and did this "minor" damage to the drive.) But the question remains. After paying to Norton for running Ghost we wouldn't even be able to recover from it :)
So I'd appreciate if someone could shed some light on it. Because if I can't recover my data, I'd look for some other solution. Thanks in advance!
