How does NIS Subscription Verification work?

Hi to anyone who can offer some insight,

It may be a Symantec secret, but can anyone give me a general picture of how does NIS 2010 go about its subscription verification?

I have been facing now and then, a symptom I call "Random NIS Self -Deactivation".

I posted here before: http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/Activation-Bug/m-p/209943

During that time, my windows services "SSDP Discovery" and "UPnP Device Host" were on "Automatic" startup.

In an attempt to improve on the "systray missing icon" issue on W7, I tried a similar "Ostuni" workaround by setting "SSDP" and "UPnP" to "Automatic (Delayed Start)".  Now I seldom get missing systray icons, and the situation for NIS had improved from before, i.e. NIS won't deactivate itself when I'm in the middle of using my computer.

Currently, once in a while only when I booted up my computer, NIS is deactivated.  Is it somehow related to the services mentioned?

I've noticed another probable cause.  Last night before I slept, NIS auto-liveupdated before the computer was shutdown.  When I turned on my computer today, NIS was deactivated.  Some probable link with liveupdate?  I don't think I can duplicate the self-deactivation as it seems random to me.

Anyone please....???  Most appreciated....
